Donald Bosten Obituary

Donald Bosten, 93, of Rutland, Vermont, died January 16, 2016, at home, after a four-year battle with cancer.
He was born December 21, 1922, in Edgely, North Dakota, the son of Joseph and Nellie Bosten.
Don was a standout high school basketball player and in his senior year, earned a spot on the 1943 all state basketball team.
After he graduated from high school, he served in the U.S. Navy and was a gunner/corpsman on the USS Karashan Bay Aircraft Carrier, and fought in WWII.
He met Ann Elizabeth McBride in Boston, Massachusetts, at a "ships party" at the Copely Plaza hotel in 1946 and they married shortly after that. They celebrated 54 years of marriage until Ann passed in January 2000.
Don worked for the S.S. Pierce Import Co. for 40 years.
He was an avid outdoorsman and especially loved playing golf. He was a member and tournament director at the Proctor-Pittsford Country Club for 35 years. He also loved to bowl and play cards and most recently in his senior years, bingo.
He was a member of the Rutland Elks Lodge for 35 years, served two terms as their Exalted Ruler, and a member of the American Legion Post #31. He was also a member of the foster grandparent program.
Don is survived by his son, Jeffrey and his wife, Karen, of Los Angeles; grandson Steven Schutt and his wife, Danielle, and two great-grandchildren, Kaitelyn and Brayden, of West Rutland; nephews Gene and Kent Sumenicht of Northern California; and his loving companion of 16 years, Marlene Quinn of Rutland.
Besides his parents and wife, Don was predeceased by his brother, Dale, and two sisters, Eva and Emma Sumenicht.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, January 20, at 11 a.m. at Christ the King Church, a reception will follow.
Burial will be at a later date in St. Jerome's Cemetery in East Dorset, Vermont.
In lieu of flowers, any contributions should be made to Foley Cancer Center at the Rutland Regional Medical Center.
Arrangements are under the direction of Clifford Funeral Home in Rutland.

Jeff and family, my Dad and I send our sincere apologies the passing of Don, my Dad and yours were great friends and golf buddies. Your Dad was a great tournament director and always kept asking my Mom for over 25 yrs to help run the member guest tournament up till my Mom got sick she enjoyed working with your Dad all 25 yrs she did the tee times. So my Dad wanted you to know how much he and my Mom liked your Dad
Dad says almost all his good golf buddies are leaving for a better place. Lets hope. Sincerely
