Philip worked on the family farm all his life. He loved collecting anything, especially antique cars. He enjoyed attending car shows and loved any kind of celebration, especially family celebrations. Philip loved animals, enjoyed socializing and loved driving around in his truck and visiting with people he passed by. Philip was a member of the Danby, Mount Tabor Volunteer Fire Department, the Rutland County Maple Producers, St. Paul Catholic Church in Manchester and, formerly, Holy Trinity Church in Danby.

I couldn't have been more than 3 or 4 when I first met Phil at the barn and he nicknamed me "Pam Bam" He remembered that name every time he saw me too! Such a caring and easy going spirit. It was impossible not to like him.

Every year when my dad comes to visit he especially looks forward to running into Phil in town and catching up on the years events. He will be greatly missed by us and so many more.

Mary, Meg and Family please accept our sincerest condolences, and know that our memories of Phil will be happy ones. I will miss him at all of the town functions for sure!

Dear Meg, Mary, Julie, Paul and families,
We were sorry to learn of Philip's passing...but know that he wouldn't have wanted not to be able to get around and do the things he wanted.
He was missed at the "Maple Sugar House" by many, many people this year.
Remember the good times and take one day at a time.
Sincerely,

Jorden Blucher

September 17, 2010

I can not remember the last time I saw or spoke to Phil, it has been many years since I have spent a long amount of time at my parents house. Often though, when I came to visit, I would take the road by the farm because that particular spot seemed to be a place of grounding for me. Though I did not know Phil well, I did know him all my life and no mater how long it had been since I had seen him he always had a big hello and always asked what I was up too with sincere interest.
As a child we would take our two silver milk cans over to the farm to get fresh milk directly from the vat. This is one of my fondest memories of growing up in a small town and having it rise to the surface the other day gave me pause. For it was something that I am sure I will never be able to do with our son Noah, which makes me sad. This was something that has had a lasting impact on me; I have used this memory to help keep myself grounded in a world of increasing stress and materialism. Going to the Raiche family farm to get milk was, at the core, a simple and great experience that all children should be so lucky to have.

L aughing all day long

These are the things that many of us will missing. It is more than family and friends that are feeling this loss it is the the town that will be missing something that many of us took for granted that would be there for always. As we have learned none of us are here forever. We need to take a lesson from Phil and laugh and say hello when ever we can to each other. Our prayers are with the family.

I was very fortunate to know Phil for a 5 years.. We used to work together at a Cabinet making company. When you seem to have a bad day. He used to come up to you and just had something sarcastic to say that would bring a smile to your face.. He was a very hard working person, also a caring person that helped others. There will never be another person like Phil. I will remember phil as a rare piece of art work.. Thank you for the memories. May God Bless you..

God Bless You all. Phil was very special. He always made me feel like a family member instead of the "new person in town" and that always meant a lot to me. He will be greatly missed by us but I'm sure he's entertaining all his old and new friends in heaven.

We are thinking of all of you at this sad and difficult time. We always enjoyed our visits with Phil - most recently at a Friday Night Live event in downtown Rutland. We were sitting at Sabby's outdoor dining area and Phil came by to talk with us while we were waiting for our meals. We are glad that we have that nice memory!

Philip certainly carved a niche in our world didn't he?? Many fond memories of the trek to get milk-my children did enjoy that task and it was all due to Philip. To Philip's Family: I've known Phil since highschool. We just enjoyed our 40th highschool reunion recently. If it wasn't for Phil, I probably would not have gone! We had such a good time. I will miss his wonderful sense of humor and the funny stories he would tell me. He made me smile. He was a good friend and I know that heaven has a special place for Phil! I wish things could have been different, but at least I know he's in God's hands now! If there is anything I can do, please...just ask! I pray that God will comfort you in this time of great sorrow.

Raiche Family. May your hearts soon be filled with wonderful memories of joyful times together as you celebrate Phil’s well lived life! I have known Phil all my life and he will surely be missed. Martha and I will cherish the memories forever of Phil and will always cherish the family milk can that he gave us. I remember as if it was yesterday when I would come home on leave and get the annual updated tour of the barn and farm operations. If it was summer time there was haying to be done and winter (well let’s not talk about that!) his mother always had a wonderful lunch and evening meal prepared. I would tell him stories of the sea and he would update me on his happenings. Such wonderful times that I and my family will always cherish. It was so wonderful to have seen Phil at our class reunion last month. As we say in the Navy! May you have “FAIR WINDS AND FOLLOWING SEAS ALWAYS” You will always live in our hearts and prayers. September 12, 2010

My deepest sympathies to the family of Philip. I was a child of 7 or 8 when I first met him in the barn. The sights, sounds, scents, routine and work of the farm impressed me. I would arrive with a Tropicana orange juice bottle to have filled up with the warm, creamy milk from the stainless steel vats. Philip would always make small talk, difficult with a shy, quiet child, but always he was positive and energetic and sometimes would let us go out in the barn to see the cows and the kittens running wild.... he was always very engaging. It always struck me that he was so kind to a silly child when he didn't have to be...that stuck with me all my life. In his small way, he helped me to see that it was important to make others feel comfortable and that it was easy to do if you just "be yourself" and listen....
May peace be with you,

Philip Raiche, Danby, Vermont

Sugar maples lined
The dirt road
Leading
To the farm
Early evenings
Heading for the barn
Fresh milk
For the dinner table
Trying to beat the cows
To the corner
To sit upon the fence
Or the water trough
And wait
For Philip.

Philip,
My sweet, precious memories
Of corn fields, red barns, cow manure
Neighbors, friends, family
Of freedom
Of this glorious country
You were so much a part
Of me
Of all of us
Forever your singsong voice
Will ring through the maples
Calling the cows home.

To the girls and their family you are in my prayers. Philip was so very prominent in my childhood memories, so dear to my heart. He taught me a great deal about tolerance and kindness.

Dear Meg, family and friends:

On behalf of All Saints' Anglo-Catholic Church Rutland we send our love, prayers for this most difficult time. Our Mass today at 4:00 p.m. will be in his memory and the Sanctuary Lamp will burn this week in his memory and to the glory of God. Phil was so faithful to our little parish, always greeting with a smile, somethings kind or witty to say and yes those 'maple squares" for our fellowship hour that follows worship. His gift to our church his family statue of the Blessed Virgin Mary that we will look upon for years to come... He is now in a place of no pain, tears or disappear. We thank our Heavenly Father for Phil, his witness and caring spirit. May God grant His everlasting peace.

Meg and Family,
We are so sorry to hear that Phil didn't survive the accident. He was a hard worker, a good guy, and a great friend to us. The Maple Barn and the Car Shows will be a lot less colorful without him. He would light up for weeks talking about those events, and a person could really get caught up in his enthusiasm! Although he had a lot of handicaps they never stopped him from living a full and rich life. I know I'll never forget his smiling face and the impish grin he would get at times. We will miss him greatly, as will his many, many friends. While our thoughts and sympathy are with you during this difficult time, we hope you will find comfort in the many happy memories you have shared. Nastrovia Philip!

Dear Meg, Mary, and families:

We are both so sorry to hear of Phil's passing. I will always treasure the memory of our weekend in Vermont, especially when Phil let me ride the tractor around the yard. He was certainly one of the "good guys." Our love and prayers are with all of you.

For all of Phil's Family!

Our deepest condolences regarding the loss of Phil. We are shocked!!! The SugarHouse at the fair will NEVER be the same. I will never forget Phil's distinct morning whistling echoing through the barnyard every morning.
