Alan Lieberman Obituary

Alan Steven Lieberman
May 28, 1945 - August 27, 2022
San Francisco, California - Alan Steven Lieberman, a former California Deputy Attorney General, was born on May 28, 1945, to Reuben and Sara (Hillman) Lieberman. Alan grew up in a close-knit and progressive family in Chicago, IL. He was the older brother to Bob of Grants Pass, OR (Kerrie) and Don of Chico, CA (Kim). He graduated from Mather High School in 1962, University of Chicago in 1966, and NYU Law School in 1969.
Alan met his lifelong partner Deborah Stein in the summer of 1968, and they were together for the next 54 years. They raised a loving family of three children (Emily, Daniel and Julia) and later seven grandchildren (Lucy, Lola, Eliza, Jay, Beatrix, Zoe and Owen). Alan died in San Francisco, CA, on August 27, 2022, surrounded by family.
In his 5-decade career as an attorney, Alan worked exclusively for the public interest, dedicating himself to improving the lives of the underserved. He worked for Legal Services programs in Chicago, Micronesia and Chico, then joined the Legal Services Corporation in Washington, D.C., improving program quality around the country. Alan spent the last part of his career at the California Attorney General's office, continuing what his former colleagues described as his commitment and passion for justice in helping prohibit marketing of tobacco and alcohol to children.
Alan was the keeper of memories for his extended family and an advocate for global peace and justice. Alan brought his kind, thoughtful, and gentle approach to all aspects of his life. With a ready smile and eyes full of warmth, he delighted in games, fruit, travel, singing harmony, and spending time with his loving family and many friends. Alan had a light footprint on Earth but a wide reach. Donations may be made to the Southern Poverty Law Center (splcenter.org) or a favorite charity in his honor. Debbie - The 4 of us got together many times in 1969 and 1970 in Chicago. We loved becoming close with you as dear friends.
I just came across this site today. Ann passed away 3 years ago at home in our place in Cambridge having had cancer and then dementia. I miss her terribly just as I'm sure you miss Alan. It's a long time of grief which never really ends, it just diminishes. I hope your kids and grandkids are nearby - mine are and they're a comfort. My very best, Norman If you feel like it, send me an e-mail [email protected]

That is a beautiful tribute to Alan! I've never met anyone as devoted, sincere, and loving as Alan Lieberman, and his glow is manifest in his whole family, who will continue his legacy. I've also never seen a closer family! My love to you all!
