Allen Marcus Obituary

MARCUS, Allen R.
Aug. 12, 1926 - Feb. 22, 2006
Allen Marcus passed away peacefully at home, surrounded by loved ones after a courageous battle with cancer. He rarely complained and did not want anyone to see his pain. He was a true Braveheart! Born in San Francisco to Etta and Morris Marcus, he was the twin to his beloved sister, Shirley Ann Goldblatt. Allen graduated from McClatchy High and Sacramento City College. In WWII, he served in the Navy, assigned to landing craft in the South Pacific. He felt it was a blessing to have come home, as many of his buddies never did. He worked with his father in the family's auto supply business for 27 years. At age 40, he took a position with National Chemsearch Corporation & moved his family to Honolulu, where he became Division Mgr. for the Hawaiian Islands. He retired after 28 years of having held record sales for the company. He loved his Hawaii. Allen is survived by his first wife, Betty; and sons, Grant of Honolulu and Philip and partner John Small, of Boston; daughters, Teri Marcus of Honolulu and Stephanie Smitheram & husband Mark of Portland, OR. Allen has left behind his best friend and true love, Janet Royer Marcus. He is survived by her son, Larry Larson, Gary Larson and wife Joann; and daughter, Kari Stevens & husband Mark. Allen's wisdom, time and encouragement for all of them will bring a big void. He finally understood the joy of being a "grandpa". He loved the wisdom of Melissa Moore to whom he listened and coached on her journey to become an R.N. He watched Jason, Kelly and Annie Larson grow into young adults, followed by Jessica and Garrett Larson, who never ever forgot to say, "Allen, I Love You". Last, but not least, a great-grandson, Wyatt Moore whose wide-eyed view and stories of San Francisco never failed to amuse Allen. He is also survived by many nephews and nieces who will miss him dearly. Allen had a special magic. He held great love for everyone and he was loved by many. He was past president of N.S.C.C. for three terms and earned kudos for raising money for both Rotary and Chamber of Commerce. He was a supporter of the arts/theatre groups and Special Olympics. Allen walked the walk. In lieu of flowers, please send any donations to Rotary Club of North Sacramento Foundation, 500 Calvados Ave., Sac., CA 95815. Private services to be held March 10, 2006.

In the early '60's, I worked across the street from Marcus Auto Supply. I met Allen at Faylor's Coffee Shop and often we took our coffee break together. Allen was a dear sweet man with a warm smile, a ready laugh and a kind and humorous word.

I so admired his courage to change his life and move to Hawaii.

When the time came for me to make changes in my life, I often thought of Allen and told myself - If Allen could do it, so can I.
