Andrew COFFEY Obituary

COFFEY, Rev. Msgr. Andrew V.
A long-respected and beloved priest of the Diocese of Sacramento who served as pastor of St. James Parish in Davis from 1963 to 1994, died Aug. 12, 2010 at Sutter Hospital, Sacramento, following a lengthy illness. He was 89. Msgr. Coffey was born in Dublin, Ireland, July 20, 1921, to William Coffey and Mary Flynn, both deceased. Msgr. Coffey grew up on a farm with three brothers and three sisters. His seminary studies were completed at St. Patrick's College in Maynooth, Ireland and he was ordained to the priesthood on June 22, 1947. He served in the Diocese of Meath for six months until he was accepted for service in the Diocese of Sacramento. Msgr. Coffey was pastor emeritus of St. James Parish and since his retirement in 1994 he continued to serve and live at the parish. He also served as pastor of St. Anthony Parish in Winters from 1955 to 1963 and as associate pastor of St. John the Baptist Parish in Chico from 1948 to 1955. Msgr. Coffey was named a prelate of honor by Pope John Paul II in 1979. He served for many years as coordinator of the Catholic charismatic movement in the diocese and as dean of the Yolo Deanery from 1985 to 1991. The priest was well-known for his dedication to the pro-life movement in the diocese as well as the Sacramento Life Center, a nonprofit resource center that gives pregnant women the support and resources to care for their babies. When Msgr. Coffey was assigned to Davis in 1963, the Newman Center at Fifth and C Streets was the only Catholic Church in the city. He was instructed to build a new parish separate from the Newman Center, so he organized a parish council to help guide him. Plans moved ahead with the construction of St. James School in 1965, as well as a new rectory. Two years later, a convent was built next to the school and the church was constructed at the corner of 14th and B streets. In a reflection he wrote for The Catholic Herald on the 60th anniversary of his ordination in 2007, Msgr. Coffey thanked his family, his teachers and all those who helped on his journey, including all of the parishioners in the parishes where he was privileged to serve. ''I enjoyed all my years of priesthood and I particularly appreciated the support and friendship of my brother priests,'' he said. ''The boundaries of the diocese have changed, the presbyterate has changed, but the mission of the church remains the same.'' Bishop Jaime Soto will celebrate the funeral Mass for Msgr. Coffey on Friday, Aug. 20 at 11:30am in the Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament at 11th and K Streets in Sacramento. Bishop Emeritus John S. Cummins of Oakland will be the homilist. A vigil service will be held on Thursday, Aug. 19 at 7:00pm at St. James Church at 1275 B St. in Davis. A potluck reception will also be held immediately following the vigil service.

Father Andrew Coffey May 1952

Taken after my First Communion. Pictured are Pam Norgren, Patricia and Ronald Kelly. As you can see, we were all in awe of this tall, handsome Irishman. The world is a richer place for his having been here, and poorer for his passing. Rest in Peace MSGR Coffey

Monsignor, before so entitled, Coffey came up to Capay Valley near Guinda to visit parishoners when I was a little girl to my grandparents' home in the mid-fifties or before. I remember he was a young priest who blessed their home. He gave the Masses in Esparto as long as I can remember at the very first church when I went there with my sisters and grandparents on Sundays. Then, when I was a student at UC Davis, lo and behold, he was the pastor of St. James Church! I remember going to Mass there at an older brick church on a corner not too far from the campus and then later at a newer facility. May God grant him the heavenly place he so deserves and may he rest in peace.

Dear Father Coffey,
On the eve of going to Davis to try and understand about your silence, I read here about your passing away.
Is Death also a way of walking into life as a dear friend of mine told me a few days before she died ?
I would like to thank you Father for this memorable exchange about Christ in november 1970 when I was both a French student and a teaching assistant at UC Davis.
I would like to thank you for your hospitality in November 2000 when I came all the way from France thirty years later to commemorate this important turning point in my life.
I would like to thank you for the Christmas cards you sent to France from 1971 to 2010.
I would like to recall the words from Isaih that meant so munch to me in 1970 ( and ever since )
"He who walked in the drakness and hath no light...
In an acceptable time have I have answered thee, in a day of salvation have I helped thee, I shall preserve thee"
Father Coffey, I will thus not see you tomorrow in Davis, but I will pray there with you in my mind and my heart

I met Father Coffey in 1988 while I went to UC Davis to study for a year long. I am from Uruguay. Since I came back, Father Coffey every year sent me a Christmas card. For 19 years, i have been receiving his cards, and I have always delayed my responses. He never forgot me. I always found excuses not to write., I never got his e-mail, too much this or that. Yestarday, cleaning up a draw, I found some of his lovely cards. So Today I googled him and I found out he passed away. I cannot deny I am crying, but yet, I will be praying to him and asking for his forgiveness, because he is now in the Best Place of Alll !!!! Love you and thanks for always beeing close to me and never forgetting me !!!!

A Star by Patrick Kavanagh:
Beauty was that
Far vanished flame,
Call it a star
Wanting better name.

And gaze and gaze
Vaguely until
Nothing is left
Save a grey ghost-hill.

Here wait I
On the world's rim
Stretching out hands
To Seraphim.

Thank you uncle Andy. Shine down on us.
