Captain A.L. Hughes

1929 - 2025

Cherished brother, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, friend, and lifelong resident of Carmichael passed away at 96. He graduated from Sacramento State College with a degree in music. He married his college sweetheart, Marilyn, Jan 27, 1951. They were married for 68 years.

Red served in the Navy for over 30 years, both on Active Duty and in the Reserve. He enjoyed mentoring young recruits for the US Naval Academy. He worked as a Music Educator, High School Administrator, and Principal of Adult Ed in the San Juan Unified School District. He was an inspiration and mentor to many. He loved camping with family, summer fun at the family cabin, and numerous travel adventures with Marilyn. He enjoyed tinkering with mechanical things and spending time with friends in the Old Engine Club. He enjoyed fine music, good scotch, and mischief on the Fourth of July.

After Marilyn's passing in 2019, Red enjoyed living in his own home with the companionship of dedicated caregivers, all of whom have the fullest measure of gratitude from his family.

Red is survived by his sister, Doris, his children; Laura (Al), Dawn (David), and Scott (Allisa), four grandchildren, three great grandchildren, and numerous cousins. He will be dearly missed.

A Celebration of Life will be held at the Carmichael Elks Lodge, 5631 Cypress Ave, Carmichael, CA, on Jan 3, 2026 @1 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Shriners Children's Hospital or SPCA.

Internment will be at the Sacramento Valley National Cemetery.
