Dr. Carl Everett DRAKE Sr.

Carl DRAKE Obituary

DRAKE, Sr.,
Dr. Carl Everett
Died peacefully of natural causes at his home in Sacramento on December 27th. He was 99. Dr. Drake was born on August 21, 1913 in Neptune New Jersey, the second son of James and Lucy Bingham Drake. He attended Morgan State College in Baltimore, MD where he earned All-American honors and was captain of the championship football team.
At Morgan he was active in several student organizations, including the Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity, which he joined in 1933. Most importantly he met Beatrice Hayes who became his loving wife of 70 years, until she passed away in 2008. After Morgan Dr. Drake graduated from Meharry Medical college in Nashville Tennessee, and completed residency in Psychiatry at Greystone State Hospital in New Jersey before moving to Sacramento in 1958 to work first for the State Department of Mental Health, and later, enter full time private practice. His psychiatric private lasted over 50 years. Amazingly he was still seeing patients, on a weekly basis, at age 99. When he passed away in December he still had new appointments on the books for January 2013.

Dr. Carl Drake left this life as he lived it, with great dignity and grace. He came through the depression, educated himself, raised a family, and was an active working psychiatrist until the very last days of a life that spanned the 20th century and more. His physical stature was imposing, but his gentle steadfastness and serenity were the traits that made him a joy to be with. He was universally admired, respected, and loved. He is survived by 4 children, 11 grandchildren, 17 great grandchildren, 16 great-great grandchildren, and thousands of patients. He lived to see his 100th Christmas; he leaves the world a better place.

Memorial services will be held on Saturday, January 26, 2013 at 2:00 pm at the Morgan Jones Mortuary Chapel, 4200 Broadway in Sacramento. Donations in lieu of flowers should be sent to the educational institution of your choice.
