Cyrus Johnson Esq
June 17, 2022
In 2003 about a week after I was sworn into the California Bar my office phone rang and a loud but friendly voice immediately began speaking:
"Is this Cyrus Johnson the lawyer? Well this is Cyrus Johnson the lawyer before you calling. Don't ever abuse the name Cyrus Johnson the lawyer. I'm counting on it. And if anybody calls you for me, send them my way. And if you ever need a friend, call me. We Cyrus Johnson's have to stick together. And you can take the J." (My middle initial, I did).
We never met in person but this made a great impression on me. We did have some overlaps (confused clients looking for one of us or the other) and only most briefly chatted a couple times over those. But he was always somewhere in my mind connected to my name/brand/reputation reminding me - be professional do a good job be a friend "I'm counting on it."
I write this because I just learned there is now another of us in California... So I looked up Cyrus A. (and sorry to see of his passing), then wrote an email to a new lawyer:
"Don't ever abuse the name of Cyrus Johnson, Esquire, I'm depending on it. And if you have somebody calling you for me let me know. And if you need a friend let me know. We Cyrus Johnsons have to stick together. I'll go by Cyrus Johnson and you can take the J."
Condolences to the family and thank you for being able to meet a funny friendly professional man who remains in my professional mind even though we never met.

Cy was a delightful man. As a Realtor I enjoyed working with him. As a friend I enjoyed Cy and Char. I will miss him at Marrakesh Country Club.
