Dorothy Costello Obituary

COSTELLO, Dorothy Jewel
aka Dorothy Jewel Myrow
aka Dorothy Jewel Bingham

Was born May 4, 1926 and passed away on May 2, 2008. A third generation native of Sacramento, California, Jewel was a graduate of Grant Union High School in Sacramento.
At the outbreak of World War Two, she trained to repair the carburetors on fighter planes and bombers. Upon graduation, she became a dedicated defense worker at McClellan Air Force Base, where, as well as contributing to the fight against our enemies during World War Two, she initially was involved in the fight against the bias that existed against female workers. The fight soon ended when the female workers proved they could do the job as well as any man. Jewel did the job so well, she was later recalled during the Korean War.
Following World War Two, she became a car hop in the new drive-in industry. Stan Burke, the owner of the Stan's Drive-In chain, was so impressed with Jewel's figure, he replicated her form, in her car-hop uniform, on his neon signs at the drive-ins.
In Jewel's later years, she moved to San Francisco, where she and her husband established a photography business and specialized in taking photos of children sitting on a pony. Pony pictures were quite popular at that time.
Jewel often said her most enjoyable employment was as a movie extra, and also as a movie production assistant, where she participated in several productions.
Jewel was very proud of her six surviving children, who all excelled in their chosen fields of endeavor. They include: Steve Myrow of Santa Monica, CA; Melissa Sahm of Las Vegas, NV; Mike Bingham of Butte, MT; Joe Bingham of Reno, NV; Ted Bingham of Fernley, NV; and Ben Bingham of Cold Springs, NV.
Jewel is also survived by ten grandchildren, including Loren Myrow; Alana Sahm; Michael Sahm and Aaron Sahm; Sean, Kevin, and Duke Bingham; Gracie, Layton and Harrison Bingham, as well as an unborn Bingham, on the way for Teri and Ben Bingham.
Additionally, Jewel is survived by her sister, Barbara Maskovich Floyd of Sacramento, and her brother, George Costello of Reno, Nevada.
Last, but not least, Jewel's loyal pals, Missy and Boozy.
Any acknowledgement made in Jewel's name should go to the local S.P.C.A., to whom Jewel was an avid supporter.
Jewel has been interred at Mountain View Cemetery in Reno.
Jewel was loved and is deeply missed by all her family and friends.
