Edith BREWER Obituary

BREWER, Edith
Born in a farmhouse in Southern Illinois, Edith Brewer, age 90, rose from those humble beginnings to become a devoted mother, an accomplished pilot, a business woman, and the administrative assistant to a State legislator.

When her soldier sweetheart, James Brewer, called to ask that she marry him, she sold his bicycle to buy the train ticket to California. They were married on November 27, 1943.

After her husband departed the military they co-owned and managed a business involving the sale or lease of what was then a new phenomenon, television sets. Always ready for adventure, Edith discovered another love, flying. She became a pilot and active member of the 99's, a womens pilot organization.

Edith was involved in the activities of her children leading her to become a 4-H teacher, a regional manager and key fundraiser for the American Field Service, host to numerous foreign exchange students and parent to a foster child.

Edith traveled the world, even defying a then State Department prohibition by traveling to Cuba from Mexico on a Russian aircraft. Edith was a sports fan and devoted follower of the Sacramento Kings.

A grand lady, she was host to persons from all walks of life and all cultures. After 61 years of marriage she lost her husband in 2004. Edith is survived by her 3 daughters, Vickie Brewer, Carla Hegarty and Paula Richardson as well as 6 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren.

A 'Celebration of Life' will be held at Serrano Country Club, 5005 Serrano Parkway, El Dorado Hills from 12:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m .on Saturday March 26th. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to Susan G. Komen for the Cure, P.O. Box 650309, Dallas, TX 75265-0309 or online at www.Komen.org.

Mrs. Brewer as I knew her holds a warm, fond, and gentle place for me. Edith welcomed me and catered to me during my teenage and young adult years while I courted the beautiful Paula, showing up often and at awkward hours in old Elk Grove. It was obvious that the three gorgeous Brewer women got their gifts from their Mom. My sincere and heartfelt condolences to all the family. Sam

I was always in awe of my aunt Edith Brewer. As a child I thought my aunt who lived in California, owned a pool and piloted a plane, was right up there with the movie stars! I had the good fortune to get to know aunt Edith as a loving, engaging, and positive person. Her laugh and smile could warm your heart. We will miss her dearly. My heartfelt prayers go to my cousins and their families. Susan Hunter White

My condolences to the family on Mrs. Brewer's passing. She and Mr. Brewer were instrumental in creating one of the most amazing experiences of my life, my time as an AFS student to England in 1966. I am forever grateful for their efforts in supporting this activity in Elk Grove.
