Eric McCASTER Obituary

McCASTER, Eric D.
Eric D. McCaster passed away tragically on light rail 1/24/14. He was born in Sacramento 5/8/62. Preceded in death by his father Cecil. Survivors include his mother Erie Christine, sisters Doris and Cathy, brother in law Winston, stepmother Lola, step brother Kareem, and numerous uncles, aunts, nephews, nieces and friends. Eric loved a good time. He was the life of the party and even used the moniker 'Funkmaster' or 'P-funk' in tribute to his favorite band Parliament Funkadelic. Always had a smile, hello, joke and hug for you especially if you are having a bad day. If you needed something moved, call Eric. Everyone was his friend. He would debate with the smartest, and sit for hours with the homeless. Loved top ramen, vienna sausage, cheesy grits, hot links, menudo, pig feet, black eye peas, and catfish. Eric enjoyed his nephews, and to them he was always Funkmaster the wrestler. He would play for hours. Always had a pair of gloves on cleaning. Loved to clean, iron, and put three pleats in his nephews dress shirts. Still would wash clothes by hand in a tub. Loved to cook exotic foods in a pot with the lid on. So when moms lifted the lid the eyes would look back at her. Whether it was octopus, eel or alligator, Eric was game to eat anything. Loved to wash and braid his mother's hair, even if she was tender headed. The loss of Eric, I feel like a penny waiting for change. Love and miss you your sister Cathy. Eric D. To Doris and Cathy -

I pray that your treasured memories of your brother, Eric, will keep you strong. Always remember that

The [spiritual] soul, being eternal, after death is like a caged bird that has been released. If it has been a long time in the body, and has become tame by many affairs and long habit, the [spiritual] soul will immediately take another body and once again become involved in the troubles of the world

To my sister, Erie Christine, and her family –

Joyce and I extend our deepest sympathy on Eric's senseless loss of life. Moving beyond the anger of the present moment, we can be comforted knowing that Eric is now being warmly embraced by our ancestors – “Mother-Dear,” “Daddy,” “John Michael,” “Pap poo,” “Daddy Royal,” “Aunt Dickey,” and a host of others – in that heavenly spiritual world. When we scan the night sky always remember that those blinking lights are not stars, but loved ones shinning to let us know that all is well with their souls.

Our family unit has much to learn from Eric's love of life, especially this “gentle giant's” caring for the well-being of others and being attentive to the needs of his ailing mother.

Sorrow is a fleeting emotion but, love is infinite. The love that Eric shared and gave to his mother, family and community will indeed be infinite. Love leaves a memory no one can steal.

Chris, Doris, Cathy:
Although a link is missing, the chain cannot be broken because love is the tie that binds our hearts. It is our prayer that your faith will sustain you during this seemingly impossible time and that the Lord will strengthen you and give you peace as only He can. Bless be the tie that bind.

It hurts my heart that my nephew Eric is no longer physically with us. And oh, what a physical, muscular presence he was. During Eric's last visit to Memphis, I took my wife and Eric to a comedy show at the Orpheum Theatre. It was a frigidly cold, windy winter evening. Eric came out of sister
Ritta's house with a fitted long sleeve shirt on and no coat. I said, "Man, you need a coat on. This is not California. Go get your coat." Eric replied "Unk, I can take this. This is nothing. I don't need a coat. I am not cold."

So, we went to the comedy show. People stared and gawked at the three of us thinking "Who are they? Is he a bodyguard." And Yes, I think most of us know what people are thinking with
their facial expressions.

During the show, Eric laughed heartily the entire show with his booming voice.
A lady sitting in a seat directly in front of us turned around as if she wanted to say "Could you please hold down your laughter?" She said nothing and turned back around and but seemed to nudge her male date who turned and looked at Eric. Her date turned quickly back to facing the stage and his date as if to say to his date "You have got to be kidding."
Thank you for being our bodyguard that cold winter night.

Eric, man I miss you. I loved your spirit, laughter, and dedication to your Mom (my sister). To Chris, Doris, Cathy, Tremayne, Brandon, and all: Simply, You will find strength in Prayer.
Peace & Love
