Gene BERTHELSEN Obituary

BERTHELSEN, Gene Peter
Died on April 10, 2011 at the age of 73 after a 7-year battle with multiple myeloma. He was born in Yreka, CA on October 4, 1937, the son of Kate Harris of CA and Valdemar Julius Knute Peter Berthelsen of Denmark. He grew up on a farm outside of Etna, CA. He pursued a music degree at Chico State but transferred to SFO State where he earned an English degree. His first job was at Shell Oil in San Francisco. He then moved to Sacramento in 1968 where he earned an MS in government at CSUS. He then served at the State of CA at the Dept. of Employment, Computer Systems, and then for 30 years at Caltrans as spokesperson/PR, Project Development, head of Environmental in Stockton, editor of the magazine 'Going Places' and of the newsletter for the Quarter Century Club. Gene is also remembered for his volunteer service to the Sacramento Traditional Jazz Society (STJS): Board of Directors, editor of the 'And All that Jazz' newsletter, head of publicity, editor of the Jazz Jubilee program for 25 years, and Executive Director of the Jazz Jubilee for two years. He is also remembered for being a theatrical critic for the Sacramento Union, the author of three unpublished novels, and the leader/cornet player of the Catsnjammer Jazz Band, his greatest joy. He is survived by his wife Donna Springer; children, Justin Berthelsen of San Francisco and Maren Berthelsen; granddaughters, Zoe and Verity of New York City; brother John Berthelsen of Hong Kong; nephew Christian Berthelsen of New York City; first wife Pamela Lynch of Sacramento; and too many friends to enumerate. Remembrances may be made to MMRF (Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation) or STJS. He requested that his cremated remains be scattered over Mr. Shasta. Please remember Gene in your own way, preferably martini in hand.

We first met Gene when working for Caltrans at the Howe Avenue Office. What a kick in the pants! We still have copies of some of the 'Going Places' with articles written by Gene. Amazing stuff! It was a pleasure to know you, Gene!

Gene.. you will be truly missed.. I will miss your smile, your laughter and your wonderful visits to Page Design. You always brought with you a spirit that can never be replaced. I am only sorry that I missed your last visit to Page Design and you brought donuts during our Monday morning staff meeting. You touched so many lives including the staff at Page Design. Please know that you will live in our hearts forever. May it give the Berthelsen family comfort to know he is at peace and watching over all those that loved him. We have lost a legend in my lifetime.

Gene taught me to throw away the music and use my ears when I was only 11 yrs. old. He showed me how to embrace life for all of it's good things and to laugh at the bad. He understood the art of music and the secret of living. I'll miss you GB.

I can't recall Gene ever having anything but a smile on his face, and good words for everyone with whom he worked. A true gentleman, and we'll hoist one--or more--and smile at his memory.

Gene and I worked together in the Computer Services Office at Caltrans. He was a remarkable man...able to do serious work and yet make it fun at the same time. I learned a lot from Gene about how to enjoy life. My condolences to the family and friends he leaves behind.

Gene, your editorial shoes are way too big for me to fill, but I'll do my best to carry the torch forward on this end of the swamp. Thanks for teaching me the difference between "trad" and "mainstream" and to not take anything in writing too seriously. You and your trumpet are up there now with the biggest of the big! Play, man, PLAY! "Laissez les bons temps rouler!"
