Gino Corti Obituary

CORTI, Gino

Gino Corti has left us.

Founder of Corti Brothers with his late, older brother Frank, Gino left us after a short illness on November 17, 2006. Gino Joseph Corti was born in San Francisco to the late Giulio and Colombina Corti on May 3, 1918. He was 88 years old. He was the beloved husband of 58 years of the late Angelina Franzoia Corti; loving father of Jack (wife Sandra), and the late Christine Corti. Devoted grandfather of Steven (wife Trisha), Jennifer (husband Josh), Elena and Lorenzo. Great-grandfather of Riley, Sydney, Hannah, and Aedan. Beloved brother of his remaining sibling, Elizabeth Cody.
Corti Brothers opened on January 2, 1947, as their logo then stated as "Successors to Meda Brothers" at 718 8th St. between I and J Sts. In 1952, Corti Brothers moved to the corner of 32nd and Folsom Blvd, a former Arata Bros store, and remained there until 1970 when it moved to its present location at 59th and Folsom Blvd. In 1964, a Corti Brothers store was opened in Arden Fair which was managed by Gino. He continued in this store until 1976 when Corti Brothers expanded and took over the former Stop n Shop store in Arden Fair. Gino was constantly on the floor at Arden Fair. In fact, Corti Brothers customers, now of a certain age, remember being given breadsticks by Gino when children and taken grocery shopping at Corti Brothers. They definitely remember Gino and the breadsticks. Perhaps you are one of them?
Gino was always in the food business. First, with Safeway, then Gerber, then Corti Brothers. But it was the people he came in contact with on a daily basis that gave him tremendous pleasure. Not being at Corti Brothers since 2003, he was fondly remembered by many customers, who asked about him. His presence was greeted warmly when he would come shopping and see old customers.
Friends and family are cordially invited to attend his Vigil Service, Tuesday, November 28, 2006 at 7:00pm at Nicoletti, Culjis, and Herberger Funeral Home (5401 Folsom Blvd in Sacramento) and his Funeral Mass, Wednesday, November 29, 2006 at 12 noon at St. Mary's Catholic Church (1333 58th St. in Sacramento.) Corti Brothers at 5810 Folsom Blvd will be closed that day in his memory. Burial will be private.
Gino's family requests that in lieu of flowers, charitable contributions be made in Gino's name to the Sacramento Food Bank, 3333 Third Ave., Sacramento, CA 95817 or St. Mary's Catholic Church, 1333 58th St., Sacramento, CA 95819.
May his memory be eternal.

So sorry to hear of Gino´s passing. I profoundly apologize for responding so late to his passing! Gino was a VERY special guy & a better human being. I first met Gino in 1969 when I was a sales representative for Zellerbach Paper company & Corti Bros was one of my first accounts to call on in my territory. Gino was a very special guy to not only myself but my family as well, lol along with Augie & Charlie. Very great people who always made certain you were taken care of! My wife would always shop there on Arden way taking our two sons who were always given the proverbial Breadsticks from not only Gino but, Charlie & Augie as well. Gino was always quick to point out how good the Breadsticks were nutritionally but, how good they were to help the teething process as the boys grew. I was always so grateful to Gino for helping me pick a wine I was trying guess what would be a good wine for my wife´s & our anniversary dinner. He chose a Leibfraumilch (spelling?) which was delicious at a cost of only 99cents & blew us away! This was our first exposure to any wine for us! Gino was an exception in every way possible. I always recalled down through the years my Mother walking to their store on Folsom Blvd. to buy her favorite Petrale Sole for our dinners when I was younger. Great to have those great memories over the years of those guys Augie, Charlie, Frank & Darrel along with a very special GINO, one very fine gentleman as well!!! Rest in peace Gino, you´re forever in our memories. Derek Gilchrist & families!!!!

An uncommon man with a humanely common touch! When I was a rep with Zellerbach paper co. I had the distinct pleasure & privilege to work with Gino in assisting him & his store for their packaging needs for all their cold cuts & wines. My wife would always do her shopping for the unbelievable Deli meats & with our two young sons, Derek& Jeff would always get their nourishing bread sticks from two guys who always were Gino´s sidekicks, Augie & Charlie, who were a gift to the workings of Gino. These two guys were always instrumental in making sure we were aware how good the breadsticks were for their teething as they grew. Fun times for all & such caring people!!! I was also so grateful to Gino as well for suggesting a wine I was buying for my wife & Our fifth wedding anniversary. I recall it was liebfraumilch (spellin?) & it was 99 cents for the bottle & was an exceptional wine. Couldn´t thank Gino enough for his choice & we thoroughly enjoyed it. Now 53 years later we still reminisce about it today.? Always remember Gino´s translation that it was called "Lovely ladies milk"! So sorry we couldn´t have remembered you Gino some time back along with Augie & Charlie. You are always in my thoughts down through the years along with our entire family!!!!

Gino will always be remembered for his cheerfulness, generosity and kindness. Growing up, I lived just across the park from the Corti's and Christine and I were classmates. Angela Corti picked me up almost every day to go swimming at the KC swimming pool during elem school yrs. I frequently was invited to have dinner at their house afterward. Gino and the Corti family were part of my growing up years and I am grateful to have known their love and kindness. Gino will be sorely missed. He was always friendly to my mom and I at the store, and always joked with us and made you feel special. He was a true friend and gentleman whether at his home or in the store.

Gino has been missed at daily Mass at St. Mary's and his visits to Sacrament Food Bank. Knowing that he has passed on means he will not be returning to the pew behind mine at St. Mary's. He was a wonderful man, loved by children of all ages. May he rest in peace.
