Elk Grove, California - Born to Juan & Maria Diaz in Brawley, CA, Gloria Diaz, 81, passed away, of natural causes (not Covid related), peacefully at home, surrounded by loved ones (& listening to her favorite Juan Gabriel), on Saturday, April 3, 2021 (Sabado de Gloria).
Preceded in death by her father, Juan Lopez Diaz (aka Papa Juan), her mother, Maria Yepiz Diaz (aka Mama Cita), her aunt Angie Yepiz Chicon (aka Nina Angie), and her sister, Anita Diaz Madriz (aka Mama Anita).
Survived by her niece Gloria Madriz and her nephews, John Madriz, David Madriz, and Mario Madriz.
Gloria (aka Mama Nina to her godchildren) moved to Sacramento as her niece's guardian and then to Elk Grove soon afterwards. Mama Nina was a beloved godmother/aunt and devoted Catholic who enjoyed traveling, playing slot machines, cooking, crossword puzzles, and was a foodie. We often traveled to El Centro's Celia's Mexican restaurant, best combination plates with enchiladas, tostada, tacos and also Ma's Kitchen, best sweet and sour pork, to Oroville's Shakey's Pizza Parlor to eat pizza, chicken, and of course mojos, to Vacaville's Murrillo's Mexican restaurant, for their best menudo, and Elk Grove's Plaza Del Sol, for their best beef machaca plate.
Mama Nina loved and was full of life, always prayed for others, loved to listen to people, and enjoyed people watching. She loved her novelas and Days of Our Lives. She was always up on current events. A huge Kennedy, Clinton, and Biden supporter. She also supported our brother David when he ran for Brawley City Council in 1989.
Graduated from Brawley Union High School and attended some college, soon afterwards she devoted her life caring for her nephews and niece. She last worked as a household manager monitoring household needs, overseeing property, tracking expenses, and saving money by clipping coupons and scouring the weekly grocery ads for good deals. Stocking up on supplies like water and toilet paper (who knew?) when they were on sale.
She will be laid to rest at the East Lawn Elk Grove Memorial Park & Mortuary. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Missionary Oblates Of Mary Immaculate at https://www.oblatesusa.org/ and please submit a prayer request for Gloria Diaz.
