Grant Miller Obituary

MILLER, Grant Edward Of Ashland, OR passed away July 22, 2014 at the age of 72. He was born in Ukiah, CA and moved to Eureka, where he started school. After winning the school kite-flying contest in first grade, Grant thereafter chose not to participate in any elective sports programs offered at any of the schools he attended. He moved in a distinctly cerebral direction, developing one of the driest senses of humor known to humankind. He graduated from C.K. McClatchy High School in Sacramento in 1959, and from Stanford University in 1963. Grant retired as Principal Consultant to the California State Senate Committee on Budget and Fiscal Review, following a three decade career serving the California Legislature. Grant is survived by his wife Elise Manders, son Aaron (Lauren) of Carmichael, and delightful granddaughters Alexis and April. To celebrate Grant's departure for the great bakery in the sky, there will be a memorial service at 2pm Sunday August 3, 2014 at Temple Emek Shalom, 1800 East Main Street, Ashland, OR. Donations in Grant's memory may be made to Temple Emek Shalom ( www.emekshalom.org ) or to the charity of your choice.

Hello Elise, this came up in my old work address and of course I am glad to be reminded of all the great times I enjoyed with Grant - and you. He was really someone special to me because of his wisdom about recovery and his caring for me. Let's talk soon. Sending love and hugs to you. Laura

It is unusual for a person gifted with incisive intelligence to be, at the same time, both gentle and kind. The dry wit for which Grant was justly celebrated is often more than a little too sharp for the comfort of those around him.
Our friend Grant Miller was certainly intelligent and was justly celebrated for his incisive humor and dry wit; but he was, more than anything else, kind. What in another person could have been a sharp edge was in Grant clarity of perception. He could and did make judgments about what was going on in the world. But the lasting effect in our minds is deep understanding, not acerbity.
We are grateful to have known this remarkable man and only wish he had been with us all for "four score and ten."
No one could have had better and more compassionate care than that lovingly given by Elise to Grant during the process of his passing from us.
Sharon and I love them both and are grateful that they are, and will both remain, part of our lives.

Aaron and Elise, You know how much I cared for Grant and how my life was enriched by his love and never ending hope for my life. I will always miss him, but am grateful for all he gave me.

With his gimlet eye for the human foible, Grant was the gold standard for dry humor -- a rare and precious thing. He will truly be missed.

My condolences to Grant's family. Grant and I were good friends for many years, having been room-mates and Senate employees starting in 1963.
