Howard Harris Obituary

The Harris family mourns the loss of their patriarch, Dr. Howard L. Harris. Dr. Harris was born January 2, 1930, in Memphis, Tennessee. Dr. Harris served in the U.S. Navy during segregation, retired from the U.S. Postal Service, was a civil rights activist with Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., served as co-founder and president of the Sacramento Urban League, was a professor at California State University, Sacramento, served on the Sacramento County Grand Jury, was a member of the Sacramento Juvenile Justice Chaplaincy Board of Directors. Dr. Harris was the Dean of Student Services at Consumes River College, served as a Commissioner for the OSHPD, CHPDC and countless committees. He was a prolific and successful grant writer for many non-profit, community organizations. He was a true public servant. Dr. Harris is survived by his wife Ruth, his sons, William Harris (Cammie), Kevin Harris, and Dee Ireland Lewis, son-in-law DeWayne Holloway, six grand- daughters, and five great- grandchildren, brother Eugene Harris (Lillie), niece Regina and nephew Myron. He was preceded in death by his daughter, Linda Holloway and his parents. Dr. Harris leaves behind a beautiful legacy that has enriched his family and will echo through the Sacramento community. Dr. Harris passed away on the evening of April 30th, surrounded by his loving family. He was greatly loved and will be sorely missed. The memorial service will be May 13th, 11 am at his church, Living Way Community Church at 510 Whyte Ave., Roseville, CA. For more information, visit EastLawn.com.
