ELKIN — Mrs. Irene Sloop Ray, 83, of Elkin, passed away Monday, April 7, 2014, at Hugh Chatham Nursing Center. She was born Jan. 18, 1931, in Surry County to Lester Sloop and Audrey McCoin Sloop. Mrs. Ray was the longtime face of Cash and Carry Supermarket in Elkin and later became the marketing director for Parkwood Retirement Community. She was a member of Friendship Baptist Church. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, Everette Sloop. Survivors include her husband of 65 years, Claude Roger Ray; daughters, Jennifer Ray Swaim and her husband James of Elkin and Tracy Ray Lassiter of Charlotte; brothers, Brady Sloop and his wife Christine of Elkin and Sammy Sloop and his wife Jan of Jonesville; grandchildren, Boone Lassiter and Audrey Lassiter; stepgrandchildren, Missy Swaim Leary and Jeff Swaim; stepgreat-grandchildren, Gray Murray, Max Murray, Nicholas Swaim and Olivia Swaim; and dear family friend and caregiver, Rosie Saldivar of Yadkinville. Funeral services will be conducted Thursday, April 10, 2014, at 11 a.m. at Friendship Baptist Church. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends Wednesday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Elkin Funeral Service. The family requests that memorials be made to The Ark, P.O. Box 132, Elkin, NC 28621.
