J. Harold "Sonny" Shay

J. Shay Obituary

SHAY, J. Harold ''Sonny''

In Sacramento, unexpectedly, on June 9, 2007. Beloved husband of Sharon Shay, loving father of Elizabeth Shay-Whitman and Catherine Shay and father-in-law of Kirk Whitman. He was the cherished son of the late Harold and Gladys Shay Sr. He is also survived by his sister Barbara King and her husband Presley, his grandchildren Michael Whitman and Jennifer Wilkinson and great-grandchild Isabella Whitman, cousin of Jo Ellen Nordyke and her husband Norman and Jan Dunbar. Also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.

He was a native and lifetime resident of Sacramento, age 76. At a young age, Sonny joined his father in the family business, Harold Shay Florist, a Sacramento icon for over six decades that was well-known by the phrase, "Shay it with Flowers." He retired from the floral business in 1991. A strong contributing member of the community, Sonny was a member of the Sacramento Rotary Club and The Grandfathers' Club. In addition, he co-founded the Sunshine Boys 1997, with the club's purpose being fellowship and friendship. He also was involved with the River City Cooking Crew, which helped raise money for several charities throughout the Sacramento area. Sonny was a talented woodworker with a real passion for antique furniture restoration. He was also a lifelong gardener who very much enjoyed watching and feeding the hummingbirds and squirrels while working in the yard.

His favorite thing in life, however, was spending time with family and friends. Loved by all, Sonny will be remembered for his great sense of humor and lightning-quick wit. Sonny, with his gentle, kind soul, would do anything to help someone in need. Though we will miss him dearly, he will live in our hearts forever.

Friends are welcome to attend a Mass of Christian Burial at St. Rose Church, 5961 Franklin Blvd., on Thursday, June 14, at 11:00 AM. Interment will be private.

I am so sorry to hear of Harold's passing. Just two weeks ago he and I planned the Christmas flowers for St. John's as we have done for many years.
His passing is a loss to us all and I will miss his cheerful voice and positive attitude.

There is a relationship that developes between people which can't be described as family... but is cherished more than being friends... it's called being "neighbors." They provide friendship, kindness, and security. That's what "Sonny" and his family gave to us long as I can remember growing up across the street from them. Sonny was especially supportive to my Mom when my Dad passed away. All families would benefit if they had a "Sonny" living in their neighborhood. You will be missed.

We are saddened by the loss of this sweet man. I appreciated his strong character. He and Sharon have been wonderful neighbors to my daughter (age 6) and I for the past 4 1/2 years. I loved his sense of humor, positive outlook and kindness. He was there to help on many occasions. My daughter loved shouting out and waving hello from our driveway. He will be missed. The family is in our prayers. My daughter adds: "Sonny was a good man. He was nice. I liked him and the tootsie roll pops he gave me".

I am so sorry to hear of Sonny's passing. We shared many wonderful times when we were young, especially at Lake Tahoe. May God bless you all.
