Jan WARNSHUIS Obituary

WARNSHUIS, Jan Livingston
Born March 26, 1933, in Cedarburg, WI, died March 4, 2011, in Sacramento, CA, in the care of loved ones, aged 77 years. Jan suffered from cancer and outlived it over five years while foregoing traditional cancer treatments. The youngest of nine children, from Michigan, Jan was age five when his father died in a vehicle accident and his siblings separated to live with different families. A violinist protege, his potential career as a musician changed when a blasting cap detonated in his hand. Nevertheless, he continued his life-long love of music. Jan attended High School at Holy Cross, Santa Cruz, CA, Pontifical College Josephinum, and joined the US Navy. Jan served at the California State Department of Water Resources from 1954 through the late 1960's. He was Water Master in Fall River Mills and Big Valley. Jan lived in the cities of Sacramento, MacArthur, Red Bluff, CA and McCall, ID. He was an attorney in California with a private law practice of 32 years. A golfer and avid fisherman, he played golf with his life-long friends and spent time on his boat in Bodega Bay. He readily shared his knowledge with others, was a logical thinker, with a keen mind and objective way of problem solving. Above all, he was an extraordinarily gifted and superb horseman. To those who knew him, he is a true 'Horse Whisperer.' Brothers Frederick, Garrett-John, Laurent, and Sisters Mary Ann Smith, and Dominican Sister Mary Jordan nee Moyra Warnshuis, and his daughter, Marie Lewis, predecease Jan. Grandfather of Jessica and Lani and great-grandfather of Jordy, Josie, and Haley. Survived by his brother Patrick Warnshuis, sisters Francis Grumblatt of Emmittsburg, MD and Dolores Reilly of Rocklin, CA, ex-spouse Sally Warnshuis, daughter Susan Ferry, a son, and many nieces and nephews. Jan said... 'My life was an adventure, and I go in peace.' Donations in memory of Jan may be sent to: Sutter VNA Hospice, 7300 Folsom Bl., Suite 100, Sacramento, CA 95826.

I was so sorry to hear of Jans passing. He was one of my favorite people I have ever known. He was a kind and gentle soul, and enhanced my life and my daughters by simply being who he was. Thank You Jan....Debra and Lindsey Stephens
