John Conner Obituary

John was born in Sacramento to Logan "Jay" Conner and Aloha Conner (Young) and was brother to Alana Connick, Jay Conner (twin), James "Gym" Conner, and Marla (Conner) Adams. As a youth he enjoyed many rough and tumble activities with his siblings. At the age of 5 he learned a hard lesson about playing with matches, but this didn't stop him from continuing other dangerous pursuits such as playing "chicken" with bows and arrows. Never one to throw himself into anything half-heartedly, he once helped give his brother a proper soldier's burial - for real - when Jay "died" during a game of war. (Not to worry: Jay was quickly unburied after John and Alana went home for dinner and were asked, "Where's Jay?") In his teens, John developed a love for grease, gasoline, and fast cars, winning several trophies at a Sacramento raceway. John was quick-witted and enjoyed pulling pranks on friends and family alike, from coiling a dead rattlesnake by a food cooler on a camping trip to collaborating with his brothers to move his brother-in-law's car while he was in the bathroom after a round of golf. On November 18th, 1967, John married Donna Sherburne, a union that spanned fifty years. The couple had two children, Darin Conner, and Kristen "tank" Conner. John enjoyed a career with the State of California, starting at Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) but soon moving to Department of Justice (DOJ). For most of his career he was involved with data processing and management for California Law Enforcement Telecommunications System (CLETS), giving him a front row seat to changes in computing technology from punch cards and magnetic tape reels to modern fiber optics. Outside of work, John found time to coach both River Park little league and soccer teams. Golf was a lifetime passion that he excelled at and loved, though he was only ever able to make two holes in one. John was also a "proud sponsor" of Socal's Tavern, where he enjoyed the company of many dear and wonderful friends throughout the years, and where his "dice buddies" often referred to him as "The Sage". After battling a variety of ailments for several years, John passed away in peace and comfort at home, in the care of Donna and their children, on December 2nd, 2017. A casual gathering to celebrate John's life will be held Saturday, April 21st, at 11:00 AM, at the Dante Club, 2330 Fair Oaks Blvd, Sacramento.

Donna, and Family,
We grieve our husbands and choose to memorialize them on the same date, nearly 2000 miles apart. Very difficult to have John's exuberance for the jokester finally quelched. May the many amusing memories help rekindle your lives with him away.

Sad to know our class twins, the Connor Boys, were always such mavericks. Thought maybe they'd mellow with time. Apparently that wasn't in John's DNA. He could be the headliner at your party.

With Sincere Sympathy For Your Family's Loss,
Janet (Kauffman) Chester Volness

I miss my wise-cracking, big-hearted brother-in-law. I was a young teen when he and my sister Donna began dating in the mid-sixties. Cute, funny as hell, and he had the coolest car around - a beautiful, dark green GTO. He and his twin, Jay, almost lost their lives in that car in a horrific accident. It seemed a miracle that they both pulled through! The angels were definitely looking after them!
I will be forever grateful to John for getting me a job at DOJ. It started me on a new career path, and changed my life.
