Joyce Raley Teel Obituary

Joyce Raley Teel
February 9, 1931 - February 25, 2022
Carmichael, California - After 91 years of living life to its fullest, Joyce Raley Teel peacefully passed away at home on February 25, 2022, from natural causes.
The only child of Thomas P. Raley and Claire Mason, Joyce was a proud champion of the Sacramento community for over nine decades. From her early childhood days in Placerville, helping behind the counter of her parent's small grocery store to eventually serving as Owner and Co-Chairman of the Board for Raley's, Joyce was loved by all for her humility, kindness, and commitment to helping others.
Joyce met her husband, Jim Teel, while students at C.K. McClatchy High School. They married in 1950 and welcomed five children. A dedicated wife and mother, Joyce was known for her bright personality, sophisticated personal style, and her famous homemade pasta noodles - which her children often begged her to serve up one-by-one to ensure an equal share by all.
As her children grew, Joyce turned her attention to her community. She quickly developed a reputation as a talented leader and enthusiastic philanthropist - volunteering for organizations such as the Crocker Art Museum, the Children's Home Guild, the Salvation Army, the American Heart Association, and many, many more. A true believer in the potential of Sacramento, she gave her time and talents to efforts that improved the region's future. In 2001, Sacramento Metropolitan Chamber of Commerce named her Sacramentan of the Year for her continued dedication.
In 1985, she began her career at Raley's, quickly establishing herself as the heart of the successful company. Passionate about people, she launched Raley's first employee magazine "Superstories", the Family Life Committee - which helped working parents access affordable childcare and free parenting classes, and the Joyce Raley Teel Scholarship Fund - which has since awarded over $250,000 to Raley's team members and their families for continuing education.
While there are few community efforts that her leadership didn't touch, Joyce is perhaps best known for co-creating Raley's Food For Families, a nonprofit organization dedicated to ending hunger. Since its inception in 1986, Food For Families has provided over 42 million meals to those in need.
A patron of the arts and a lover of fashion, Joyce wasn't afraid to get her hands dirty. She was as equally at home at the opera as she was hiking in her beloved Lake Tahoe or backpacking in Nepal. At the age of 65, she successfully climbed Mt. Kilimanjaro. While she forwent college to become a mother, she deeply valued education and considered herself an avid student of the world - immersing herself in civics, current events, and local issues. In 2015, California State University Sacramento recognized her contributions to the region by bestowing upon her an honorary Doctorate of Human Letters.
Despite her myriad achievements, Joyce considered her family to be her finest accomplishment. With over two dozen grandchildren and more than thirty great-grandchildren, Joyce often said that being called "Mom" and "Grandma" were her favorite titles. She will be missed beyond measure by everyone who knew her, and leaves a legacy of grace and generosity that will be unmatched.
Joyce is survived by her husband, Jim, her son Michael Teel and wife Julie, daughters Claudia Doerhoff and husband Neil, Diane Perry and husband Robert, Laurie Struck and husband Eric, and Lisa Teel, as well as more than fifty grand and great-grand children and spouses.
A private family memorial service will be held. In lieu of flowers, her family encourages acts of kindness to celebrate her wonderful life. Remembrances in her honor may also be made to Food For Families, The Salvation Army, or The Joyce Nadine Raley Teel Endowment benefitting the Crocker Art Museum.

I am already missing Joyce's laugh. People often refer to someone's smile lighting up a room; Joyces's laughter would light up the entire house. Joyce laughed freely and frequently, and it was so contagious. It warmed the heart. Just like Joyce, it was genuine. It was caring, It was loving. I will SO miss you, Joyce!!!

I'm saddened by the passing of Joyce Raley Teel. Joyce as well as Jim were leaders that made each of us feel that we were a valued and important member/contributor of the Raley's Family. Their sincerity was special, real, and that connection bonded our crew teams through out the great Company. Joyce was an Angel and now fly's with them gracefully. Thank you Joyce for everything that you did for us employees. God Bless the Teel Family.

Trying to imagine Sacramento without Joyce Raley Teel is bringing to mind Bedford Falls without George Bailey in "It's a Wonderful Life." Joyce lived her own generous life, filled with the grace of her presence. It was a gift to share it with her.

I met Joyce and Jim Teel through her father Tom Raley.
Tom and Joyce were big supporters of the Republican fundraising efforts when I was employed at the California State Legislature. Tom graciously allowed us to use the "Ozark Lady" for a very successful fundraiser for Senator Jim Ellis. Such a wonderful and caring family who cared so much about our community.
Joyce will be missed by everyone who knew her.

I just retired from Raley's Distribution Center in Natomas, drove many miles as a Class A truck driver for them. Transferred up from Nob Hill many many years ago. She will be sorely missed oh, there's one thing you can never take away from us as employees and former employees, it's memories. I will go into my retirement with pleasant thoughts of the many years that I contributed to making Raley's what it is. Thank you

My sincerest condolences to the Teel family. I started working for Raley's in the Main Office in 1973, one week after graduating from high school. I spent the better part of 34 years in the Sign Shop and Advertising departments, basically growing up with the company. It was such a pleasure to work with, and for, the Teel family. I was very proud to work with people who were so committed to improving our community with their many contributions to the arts and culture of our region. When Joyce would talk to us at various gatherings in the office, she would always tell us that we were all part of her family, and I knew that she sincerely meant it. She was the best.

I have the most wonderful memories of the Teel's. Living just a hop and a skip away. I miss those days of innocence. We would play in the street kicking a ball around. Ice cream trucks coming around. Your mom was well a mom I wish I had. She was so vibrant and real. When I would have a conversation with her it was like no one else was in the room. What a treasure. I remember seeing her walking up the stairs to the balcony in her tennis out fit and that strawberry blond ponytail of hers. What a cutie and I don't even think she knew it. I have to laugh, one of the other moments I remember was her voice from sweet to almost Opera when she would call out for Michael. You knew it was Joyce. Only Michael would know what that was all about. Their dog Katie was so special and a big part of the family. Their home was so bright and full of love. You could feel it like the Holy Spirit. I miss you all so much. Michael, Claudia, Laurie, Lisa, Diane and Katie were a treasure in my life. I wish you all the comfort and peace in Jesus Christ our Lord and Savior. Faith looks up sorrow looks back. Amen. Pamilla xoxox

I'm so glad I got to be apart of the Teel family. I grew up with the five Teel Kids along with my three sisters in Carmichael. I have fond memories of Joyce always having all of us kids over to play in the rumpus room and in the back yard and swim in the pool. Joyce would throw birthday party's for all of us kid's. I celebrated my twelfth birthday party birthday (along with my twin sister Pam) with the Teels. Joyce was so gracious and caring to us. Joyce was like our second Mom. I'm grateful that I got to know Joyce. So, my deepest heart felt condolences to, Michael, Claudia, Diane, Lorie, Lisa and Mr. Jim Teel the anchor of the family. I'm so sorry for your loss.

I started at Raley's shortly after Mrs. Teel and always thought she was kind and considerate. I remember once I received tickets to the theater, and I asked her for advice on what to wear. Her advice was sweet and funny - "It's Sacramento. Wear whatever you're comfortable in." Condolences to the entire family.

My condolences to Mrs. Joyce Raley Teel family and friend's. An amazing lady who served our community in so many ways. Sacramento appreciates all that she did to improve our great city. I'm proud to have known her mother Ms. Claire Raley, who was my cosmetologist instructor at County Club College of Hairdressing, in 1969. May God bless the Raley Teel family and hold them in the palm of his hands as Joyce enters into her new eternal life
