Judy Bramson Obituary

BRAMSON, Judy

Judith Ann Bramson, born in Newark, NJ, to Henrietta Echil and Meyer Rubin on May 21, 1932, died peacefully on December 22, 2008, surrounded by her family.

Judy is survived by her children, Carolyn Bramson of Placerville (Richard Luna), Phyllis Bramson-Paul of Davis (Rick Paul) and Pete Bramson of Sacramento (Robyn Tomczak); her sister Nancy Rubin of Hartford, Conn.; her niece, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephew; and, so importantly, her granddaughters Rachel Paul and Jesse Bramson. Her husband, George Bramson, preceded her in death.

Judy received her B.A. from Antioch College and married George in 1954. They moved to the Sacramento area in 1958. She lived in Fair Oaks from 1961 until 2005, then moved to midtown Sacramento. She received her Masters in Public Health from UC Berkeley in 1976.

Judy began her 25-plus year career at the Community Services Planning Council in 1966, became the Associate Director in 1971, then established and was Director of the County Health Council until retiring in 1997. She was instrumental in establishing the Children's Commission and the Public Health Advisory Board, and a center for autistic children; was a valued advisor and gadfly to the County Board of Supervisors.

Judy received many awards recognizing her tireless leadership and volunteer contributions to the San Juan Forum, League of Women Voters, KVIE, Alzheimer's Association, Healthcare Domestic Violence Network, CSUS Womens Center, Golden State Donor Services, and the committee to develop a comprehensive AIDS plan for the counties of El Dorado, Placer and Sacramento. She was an also active in numerous political campaigns (especially Democratic!).

Judy was a woman of substance; respected for her intelligence, tenacity and ability to get things done. She loved and nurtured her family and friendships. She was known for her dependability, efficiency, thoughtfulness, her unselfish commitment and love towards others, and for being a doting grandmother to Rachel and Jesse. Jude will be remembered for her gourmet cooking, crosswords, newspaper clipping, ''nagging'', and her mustard. She loved Spring & Summertime, good wine, gardening, reading (especially mysteries), Mendocino, and KXPR.She was renowned for how much she could convey with one of her ''looks''.

Judy will be sorely missed by the many that knew her. In deference to her wishes, the family will not be holding a memorial. Judy asked that, in lieu of flowers, remembrances be made to: Community Services Planning Council, 909 12th St, Suite 200, Sacto, CA 95814; or Alzheimer's Association, Greater Sacramento Area Office, 530 Bercut Drive, Suite A, Sacto, CA 95811; or Sutter Medical Center Foundation, 2800 L St, Suite 620, Sacto, CA 95816.

Judy was an inspiration to all who were lucky enough to know her. She was so well informed and experienced that you really needed and wanted her counsel before you took off on your own. She set a high standard for community service and awareness in Sacramento and she truly will never be replaced.

Dear Carol, Phyllis, and Pete,
I was sorry to hear about your mom. She was a unique individual who had a great impact on my life. She showed me a woman could be a mother, a wife, a community leader, a hostess, a great cook and have a successful career. I remember fondly to all the times in both Fair Oaks and Mendicino. Judy was truly my second mom.

Judy was a very special friend and a model for all who wanted to do meaningful and important and lasting work for the entire community. Judy's finger prints are all over the health and human services community and a wonderful legacy for her terrific family. They should all know in how much esteme, regard and affection Judy was held. She will never be replaced but will leave a permanent imprint on the Sacramento community. Our best to Phyllis, Carole and Pete and the much adored grandchildren. Love, Karen and Don Taranto

Phyllis. I just wanted to write and let you know how fondly I remember George and Judy. We first worked together to support Channel 6 - in the days when there were only four staff people, and the rest of us were volunteers! They were both wonderful, interesting, delightful people; each in their own way. They have enriched the history of the Sacramento Region and helped to shape what we are today. We all share your loss.

Dear Carol, Phyllis and Peter,

I have so many fond memories of play together in your amazing and wonderful pathway and bamboo-filled backyard, always under the watchful eye of your mom. Time in the kitchen; time out on the deck; play and conversation; running the 7809 mail mistakes over to your house: your mom, your dad, too, and all of you, were such a part of my growing up. I am thinking about you now, and will continue to send many thoughts your way.

Hooray for your mother and all that she's done, the difference she's made in so many lives. Hooray to all of you, her children, who carry her spirit and energy forward from here.

My condolences to Judy's family. I can only imagine how much you miss her. When we would get together for lunch with BJ, Judy would always give us the family update - especially about Rachel and Jesse -she so clearly adored them.
