Kenneth Mitchell Obituary

Kenneth Mitchell
December 4, 1939 - December 13, 2020
Sacramento, California - Kenneth Leroy Mitchell was born in Eaton Rapids, Michigan to Rowland and Addie Ekins Mitchell. As a youth he was active in Boy Scouts, earning the rank of Eagle Scout. After high school he attended Michigan State University, graduating in 1963 with a Bachelor of Science in Landscape Architecture.
He was hired by the State of California Department of Parks and Recreation in 1963. In his 37 years with the department, Ken was generally involved in the planning and acquisition divisions for current and future state parks. He retired in December 2000.
Due to his interest in parks, he became a member of the Board of Directors for the local Sunrise Recreation and Park District between 1971 and 1995. While his sons were young; Ken became a coach, manager, and referee for both Foothill Farms Little League Baseball and Foothill Soccer Club. He enjoyed being a very involved father. Later he cheered on his grandchildren's sports.
Over the years Kenneth and his wife Elizabeth enjoyed traveling. Due to his love of parks, they visited many state and national parks around the country. They were able to visit all 50 states and to travel around the world. The last few years became more difficult as Ken developed Alzheimer's. He peacefully slipped away December 13th from complications from COVID-19 and Pneumonia.
Ken is survived by Elizabeth, his wife of 56 years, his sons Michael and Steven. His daughter in law Karen and three adult grandchildren, Amanda (Jamieson), Andrew, and Ryan. His brother Bruce (Dare) and his sister Marilyn.
Due to the Corona Virus pandemic and in the interest of everyone's safety, only a small family service will be held. The family hopes a Celebration of Life can be held in 2021.
In lieu of flowers, any donations to your local or state parks foundations, or to an Alzheimer's research foundation would be appreciated.
