Milton KANE Obituary


KANE, Milton Barney

Died peacefully on July 14, 2013 at the age of 78. He died with his wife of 54 years at his side. He was being cared for by his wife and family as well as some wonderful caregivers at the end of his life.

Milton Barney Kane was born in Longview, Texas on January 11, 1935. He moved to Alameda, California in 1943 where he graduated from Alameda High School and was an all conference basketball player. He attended Modesto Junior College before volunteering for the draft in 1953 during the Korean War. After his time in the United States Army he returned to Modesto Junior college in 1955. He was all conference on the basketball team earning him a scholarship to the University of Utah. He was later inducted into the Modesto Junior College Basketball Hall of Fame. After two years at Utah he was drafted by the New York Knicks but elected to attend Law School.

He married his wife Kay (Pierpont) Kane in 1959. They had three children, Susan, Mark and Michael. He volunteered coaching basketball and baseball for many years staying active in his children's lives.

After attending Hastings School of Law, he practiced law for 32 years at the California Department of Transportation in Sacramento. He retired in 1997. Upon retirement, he volunteered to provide free legal services to the elderly and he and Kay began to travel. Their travels took them to Hawaii, Australia, Alaska, Costa Rica, the Panama Canal and rafting down the Grand Canyon. He also enjoyed playing cards with a group of loyal friends who continued to gather and play with him until the end of his life.

Milt will be remembered as a generous family man who enjoyed being surrounded by those he loved. He was preceded in death by his parents, Fred and Vivian, his brother John and his sister Vivian. He is survived by his wife Kay, his daughter Susan, his son Mark, and his son Michael and his wife Stacie. He is also survived by his three grandchildren whom he adored, Kathryn, Audrey and Sam.

A committal ceremony will be held at 11:00 a.m. on August 9, 2013 at Sacramento Valley National Cemetery, 5810 Midway Road, Dixon, CA 95620. A reception will follow at 12:30 p.m. at Cattlemens, 250 Dorset Court, Dixon, CA 95620.
