Pauline Caple Obituary
Pauline E Caple
January 12, 1942 - April 2, 2025
West Sacramento, California - Pauline Easton Caple passed away in Sacramento, on April 2, 2025. Pauline was known to family, friends, colleagues, and all who loved her as "Polly."
Polly was born in Evanston Illinois on January 12, 1942, to parents, Josephine and Ben Fillis. The family soon moved to Lake Bluff, Il, where Polly grew up and attended primary and high school. Polly is survived by her sister Yvonne M. Curley (Fillis) and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her beloved son Woodson (Woody) Blackledge Hand, her husband Steven Caple, and her sister Belinda M. Miske (Fillis). She is also survived and remembered as a loving Aunt to numerous nieces and nephews.
Polly chose to attend Carleton College in Northfield, Mn, despite receiving a scholarship to attend any state of Illinois College. After graduation, she and her first husband went to Germany, where he was stationed. During this time, their son Woody was born, and Polly and Woody's father had a successful translation business.
After moving to Sacramento, Polly began a 30 year career with Alta California Regional Center as a social worker serving children with developmental and intellectual disabilities. She was loved and appreciated by the parents of the children on her caseload. In Sacramento, she met Steven Caple, and after a whirlwind courtship of 6 weeks they married and had a marriage that lasted 40 years.
Polly and Steve were very active: redesigning their house, travelling both in the U.S. and the world, biking, skiing, camping, gourmet cooking, hosting wonderful parties at their North Sacramento home. Both loved music and attended many festivals, concerts and music cruises. Gardening was also a passion. Polly grew fantastic vegetables and fruits at their home in North Sacramento.
In retirement, Polly continued gardening until her health prevented it. She volunteered at the Sacramento Crisis Nursery. She was an enthusiastic student in the Renaissance Program at CSUS. She was an active philanthropist, donating to local and national charities.
Polly fulfilled her dream of moving to Washington Commons Co-Housing in June 2024. Polly will be deeply missed by many relatives and friends and her Co-Housing neighbors.
A Memorial Gathering will be held at Washington Commons on May 31, 2025, from 2:00 p.m.-4:00.
Donations can be made in Polly's honor to Sacramento Children's Home-Crisis Nursery, 2750 Sutterville Rd, Sacramento, 95820.
