Richard Gilberg

1936 - 2025

Richard Frank Gilberg, 89, of Granite Bay, passed away peacefully on Dec. 9, surrounded by family, following a year-long struggle with dementia and other health issues. Born in Oregon on May 10, 1936, he was the only child of Robert Frank Gilberg and Ann Marie Gilberg (Giorgis). His first job was as a soda jerk at his mother's soda fountain and later worked at her coffee shop in Menlo Park. He had many warm childhood memories of visiting family in Mount Shasta, CA, where his grandparents had a chicken ranch. He also enjoyed visiting cousins on his father's side in central Oregon.

Richard served in the US Army stationed at Fort Bliss, TX, from 1959-1961, and attended Stanford University, San Jose State University, and University of Phoenix, earning a bachelor's degree in financial management and a master's degree in computer sciences.

He leaves behind his loving wife of 65 years, Evelyn Margaret Gilberg (Gilley). The two met on a blind date in high school and parted ways until reconnecting while attending San Jose State University. They were married on Sept. 24, 1960. He adored Evie and would do absolutely anything for her. They traveled with family and friends to Europe, South America, Galapagos Islands, and New Zealand. Richard also liked duck hunting, fishing and golfing.

Richard worked in computer science at Lockheed Missiles and Space Co. for 27 years. He was also a computer science teacher at DeAnza Community College for 10 years and wrote numerous textbooks.

He was a member of the Knights of Columbus since high school, serving as a 4th degree color guard since 2010.

Richard was known to his family as witty, generous, loving and hard-working. Survivors include his wife, Evie; three children, Carrie Viens (Rob), Julie Anderson (Andy), and Bob Gilberg (Joy); nine grandchildren: Bryan, Chris, Amanda, Serena, Sarah, Zackery, Patrick, Jolo, and Juddine; and six great-grandchildren.
