Rocco "Richard Markel"

April 20, 2012

Photo of Rocco in 1981 on a House Boat Trip. He WAS a good looking little devil. Our boat got in trouble for sealing the other boats TP and calapulting water balloons off the back of the boat. But we had fun.

I was thinking about Rocco alot this morning as I was getting ready for work. almost too much and was afraid why the fond memories of floating on the lake shasta w/Rocco kept rolling in my mind. checked online at at work for his number to call him and found this. VERY sad indeed, he was an awesome friend and buddy.

Today I have to say goodbye to my dear friend, Rocky. To others they knew him as Richard Markel. To me he was always just Rocky. I met Rocky in 1977 when I shared an apartment on La Riviera Drive with my childhood friend, Annie. It was a time when life was so simple, and I clearly remember skipping from my car to my apartment. Not a care in the world. The Rusty Duck was a favorite haunt and Rocky, Annie and I would love to go there and have abalone. It was over the top amazing!

Through the years Rocky and I stayed in touch, I bought a few copiers for my office from him. He owned Copier Clearance Center after having had a successful career in commercial Real Estate. He always took care of me and would give me a great deal. I could purchase copiers that were several thousands of dollars for $300.

Rocky knew that I had my struggles and he continued to refer Real Estate business to me and asked me to help him with design for the remodel of his home. Just a few weeks ago I was over at his house and we sat out on the front porch and reminisced about old times. Rocky always had a sense of humor. When it came time to collect his Social Security he called me up and said he thought we should get married. He said "I would hate like hell for the Government to get all of the money I put into the system!" I laughed and said, "Now there is a romantic proposal!" It became a joke between us.

I spoke to him just at New Year's and told him I had the best New Years Eve with my Granddaughter, Coral. The best date I ever had! We talked about plans for the future, and now that he sold his business he was going to travel and enjoy life. When I got the phone call from Carmah, his neighbor, she asked me if I was sitting down. Having just shown two of her listings my first thought was I left a door unlocked and something happened. Then she said, "Richard died." I was like, who is Richard? My ex husband? I was in that fog that you immediately go into when someone asks you if you are sitting down. Who was Richard? And then the fog and the blur lifted and I realized it was Rocky. The only way I knew him. Sure I knew his real name. But to me he was always just Rocky. His infectious laugh, a mischievous twinkle in his eye, and a heart of gold.

If you have read this far, then let me leave your with this. What has circled my mind since last Wednesday when I got the call. I thought of my ex husband's dad, Papa, and how he worked all of his life and then finally got to a point where he could enjoy his retirement, play some golf and relax. Then he passed away suddenly. Rocky just sold his business, sent me 8 emails of trips he was thinking of taking then passed away suddenly. What I have carried with me is how precious life is.

I went skydiving, rocky mountain climbing........Rest in Peace my dear friend, Rocky.

Sandra Lansdon (Cooper)

January 18, 2012

Hi,
My name is Sandra Lansdon (Cooper). I knew a Rick Markel who lived off Arden Way and DelPaso Blvd as a teenager in the 60's. If this is the same Rick Markel, I remember him as a very kind, cute, sometimes quiet boy. I had a crush on him and I use to come over and watch tv with him in his back room, and when I got older and moved out on my own, he would find his way to my house to crash for a few hours now and then. The last I heard from him was a couple of weeks before my wedding in 1970, he asked me out unknowing I was engaged. I have thought of him often and had hoped our paths would cross someday. I'm so sorry for your loss, even if this isn't the same Rick Markel.
