Robert Nevins Obituary

Robert (Smokey) Nevins
September 27, 1958 - January 4, 2023
Sacramento, California - Robert (Smokey) Nevins went to be with His Lord and Savior Jesus Christ peacefully at home on Wednesday, January 4, surrounded by his loving family. He is survived by his wife of 42 years, Patty; children Rob, Lucy, son-in-law Jeff, Andy, Daniel, daughter-in-law Erin, Lila, son-in-law Nate, Amy, Steven, Emma, and Tim; 8 beautiful grandchildren; his sister, Susy, nephew Casey, and niece Kelly. Smokey was born in Sacramento, graduated from CSUS, and faithfully provided for his family for 31 years working as an analyst for the Department of Social Services. He also joyfully served as an elder at River City Grace Community Church for over 20 years. He was a wonderfully loving husband, father, and friend who will be sorely missed until we meet again in Heaven.

I am a childhood friend of Smokey's. He lived down the street from me and we hung together from 7th grade through early college. We lost touch when I left the area. I looked for him recently to reconnected. I am sad he passed away. He was a good friend and we had many good times. I realize this post is late, but I hope his family is doing well. RIP.

Smokey made you feel you were his best friend! soft spoken, faithful friend because he reflected Jesus. I am thankful God placed him in my life and his grandmother Agnes too.

I moved to Sacramento in 2002, not knowing a soul. Providentially, my faith in Christ brought me to River City Grace Community Church, where I had the privilege of meeting Smokey and family.

The Nevins family instantly welcomed me into their home and became my second family. Their home was always filled with love and laughter, providing me a source of comfort amidst the rigors of law school.

Smokey and Patty demonstrated the unconditional love of Christ in all of the years I was privileged to spend with them. Smokey was an excellent guitar player, had a great sense of humor, and loved his family, but most importantly of all, he loved and is loved by the Savior.

I know that Smokey is enjoying the eternal riches stored up for him in heaven and is finally able to see Christ, with his own eyes, face to face.

Many years ago, I had the good fortune to ride with Smokey in a daily carpool to work. Smokey was unfailingly cheerful and pleasant. On the way home in the van, several of us enjoyed doing the crossword puzzle. We would read the clues aloud, and Smokey was an enthusiastic participant. He clearly loved and appreciated his wife and children very much, and he loved telling us about his anniversary "trips" to the Coral Reef Lodge to spend time alone with his beloved wife. Though he was visually impaired, Smokey expressed gratitude for everything, even the bit of light perception he still possessed. I am so grateful that he crossed my path in this life.

I worked with Robert for several years at the Department of Social Services. He was always so helpful with complex issues I would have with the program we both worked on. He always brought his guitar to our annual Christmas parties. Robert had great sense of humor and he always teased me because I liked the program the Golden Girls. He gave me a gift set of the program after I had surgery! He will be missed by all who knew him.
