Robert Hunter Sharp, DDS
July 15, 1946 - December 7, 2024
El Dorado Hills, California - Robert "Bob" Sharp passed away unexpectedly on December 7, 2024, at Mercy Folsom Hospital. He was surrounded by his loving family.
Bob was born in San Diego, CA. He attended Herbert Hoover High School, San Diego State University for his bachelor's degree, and UCLA for his master's degree. Bob had wanted to be a dentist since he was a young boy. He applied and was accepted to Georgetown University School of Dentistry in Washington, D.C. He was thrilled to be pursuing his dream. After graduating from dental school in 1974, Bob moved to Anchorage, AK. He served three years working with the Public Health Service and provided dental care to the natives living in remote areas such as the Aleutian Islands. This was a very memorable experience for him as he was welcomed into their homes and learned so much about their culture.
Bob opened his own private practice in Anchorage where he treated patients for 19 years. He had an amazing staff, many of whom became lifelong friends who still keep in touch. He served as the president of the Alaska Dental Society for a time and was also very active in the Hillside Rotary Club. Bob embraced everything about living in Alaska during a time when it was still a wide-open frontier. He became an avid hunter, fisherman, skier, and overall outdoor enthusiast. He reveled in sharing his Alaska experience with any family members or friends who wanted to visit.
In 1993, Bob decided to take his passion for dentistry to the next level. He was greatly interested in the specialty of endodontics. In his mid-forties, he applied and was accepted to the Endodontic Program at the Veteran Affairs Medical Center in Long Beach, CA. Bob spent two years in training while treating the veterans at the hospital. This was a very rewarding experience for him, and one that he often spoke of in later years. He graduated in 1995 and moved to Northern California to join a practice in Sacramento, which he would eventually take over. Again, he was blessed with an incredible staff who became more like family to him.
Bob was an active member of the Sacramento District Dental Society and a sought-after guest lecturer at numerous annual meetings. He loved sharing his passion for dentistry, especially endodontics. One of his proudest achievements was the development of the EndoActivator. After many years of R&D, Bob, in partnership with Dr. Cliff Ruddle, developed an endodontic 3D disinfection device that is widely used in dental offices around the world today. Bob officially retired in 2017 after 22 years in practice at Sacramento Endodontics. He continued to lecture until 2020.
Bob's passion for dentistry was only surpassed by the love he felt for his family. He was a devoted husband and father. After raising two sons with his first wife, he met the love of his life, Susan, and had two daughters. Bob's greatest joy was spending time with his family. They did everything together. Over the last 20 years, they traveled to numerous countries throughout Europe enjoying the history, culture, and cuisine. Bob's outgoing personality and sense of humor opened doors wherever he went. He prided himself in his friendships. He had so many friends because he was truly such a good friend in return. Bob and family have lived in El Dorado Hills for the past 30 years and have always enjoyed opening their home to family and friends. Needless to say, everyone loved Bob.
Bob was preceded in death by his wonderful mother, Marion, and his brother, Larry. He leaves behind his beloved wife, Susan; sons, Christian (Jessie) and Justin; daughters, Jordan and Jenna; and granddaughter, Sierra (Caleb) who is expecting her first child in May. We all miss him dearly as he was a one-of-a-kind husband, father, and friend.
