Rubye (Bobbie) passed away in her sleep at home on Friday, November 28, 2008. She was the daughter of Clarence Jackson and Edna Hazell Jackson of Salty Community, TX. Her family was descended from early Texas settlers who arrived before and after the Civil War. She grew up on a farm in Salty Community and graduated from Thorndale High School (Class of 1931). She studied secretarial services and bookkeeping at a business college in Austin, TX, and later was employed by the Covert auto dealership. She met her future husband, Robert Earl McClain, at the Austin U.S.O. Club when Robert was in the Army and stationed there. They were married on August 14, 1945 in Austin at the Presbyterian Seminary and moved to Sacramento in 1946 so Robert could begin his career with an architectural firm. She has resided in the Tahoe Park area for nearly 60 years. At first, she was a stay-at-home mother who was involved in many of her childrens' activities including Tahoe School PTA, Girl and Boy Scouts, and The Sacramento Saddlelites. She was also involved in the arts as a founding company member of Dance Circle. She returned to work for six years as a bookkeeper/Cashier for Ella's Apparel in the Fruitridge Shopping Center. She studied to become a medical secretary and began employment in 1968 at the Sacramento County Hospital in the Nursing and Clinical Education unit. She remained a County Employee and continued working there as the Hospital became The U.C. Davis Medical Center. She was the 'angel' of the education unit for 26 years retiring in 1994 at age 80. Bobbie was a lifelong member of the Tuesday Club and Fremont Presbyterian Church. She was active with Bob in The Fort Sutter Lions Club. While she was able, she also attended her annual high school reunions and Community homecomings in Thorndale, TX. She was a much sought after hostess and party organizer helping to raise money for local charities and organizations in addition to the arts community. She was an excellent cook and seamstress, with an interest in baking, fashion. costume design, needlework, arts and crafts, as well as flower arranging, home decorating and gardening. She was also a talented verse writer (poet) and could play the piano by ear. She was very fond of animals especially her rescued cats, Snoopy, Kitty, and Cinderella. She leaves behind neighbors and several close friends from the Med Center. Special thanks are due to her faithful caregivers, Martha Soto and Agnes Lewanitokawa and the doctors and staff of Northern California Cardiology Associates. A memorial service and reception will be held in the Chapel at Fremont Presbyterian Church, 5770 Carson Drive in Sacramento on Saturday, December 13, 2008, at 2:00pm. Family flowers only. Remembrances may be made in Bobbie's name to the Shriners Hospital of Sacramento, The Salvation Army, American Heart/Stroke Association or the Sacramento SPCA.

Although I only remember meeting my Cousin Rubye once, when I was a child, she has a fond place in the hearts of all her Texas cousins. My grandfather was Jesse Lewis Jackson. Rubye's father, Clarence Jackson, was my grandfather's brother.

My Grandmother Jackson's specialty was making date loaf candy. In all the scattered Jackson households across central Texas, you knew it wasn't Christmas until you had received a shoebox, lined with waxed paper and bound with rubber bands saved from The Austin American-Statesman, filled with "THE CANDY".

And we owe all those wonderful holiday memories to "Little Rubye" (as my grandmother always called her), who would faithfully send "real" dates from exotic, far-off California each year, because those were the only ones that would do!

My sincerest sympathies to my McClain cousins. My mother died December 22, so I know the ache in your heart and the emptiness you feel. Please be comforted to know that her Jackson family in Texas mourns her passing with you.
