After hearing all of the kind words at the memorial yesterday, I regret having not gotten to know Scott better. I had the opportunity to work with Scott at the Corps of Engineers between 2002 and 2003. We were both students. I knew him mostly through his best friend Walter Clevenger and Walter's friend, Brian Luke, since they took classes together and worked with him regularly. For some reason his death has really struck a chord with me. Just a month ago, November 9, I had a conversation with Brian about Scott while on a class trip to the Sutter Buttes. This Sunday morning when I read through the obituaries, I was stunned. The fact that the memorial was standing-room only is a testament to the impact his life had on others. He inspired and supported others. "The clearest way into the Universe is through a forested wilderness." - John Muir

Dear Heidi, Dan, Annlee, and family,
I am so saddened to hear of Scott's passing. Several different communities are expressing their loss: UC Davis, the ornithology community, and California conservation ecologists. Scott was brilliant and talented both as a field ecologist and in academic and quantitative aspects of biological research (including writing and statistics). Scott was exceptionally well organized and hard-working - a model researcher and student in so many ways. He was the most patient, kind, and gentle teacher. We learned so much from him and admired Scott greatly. My heart is with you.

I am at a loss for words and cannot fathom the depth of your grief and sorrow. While I had only met Scott a few times, he was the focal point of many of our talks. I don't understand these things, and I don't want to understand. My thoughts of comfort are with you, and your grief is mine to share.I am devastated. If I can be of any help, just call. Bill

Annlee, I remember Scotts eagerness to be wed with you. Then he came back to yoga class glowing. :) The pain u must be feeling is surreal. But be assured God and his angels are with you. As many times as pain can cause us to become distant and bitter, persevere and embrace your trusted allies, and know you are loved beyond belief. To Scotts parents, know that your love was enough, you raised an amazing and tender-hearted man and that you both have quite a destiny beyond this tragedy. God bless you all! May his spirit be free and happy

AnnLee and family,

I am deeply saddened to hear about the loss of Scott. He spent many summer weekends over the past 10 years conducting bird monitoring for the Tahoe National Forest at the Sagehen Field Station. Scott's love of nature, dedication, and immense knowledge about Sierran birds was truly apparent on the few occasions I spent with him. I sincerely appreciate all he has done for the Forest Service, and the work he did for us will be valued for many years to come. Scott's gentle spirit, dedication, and bird expertise will be irreplaceable.

My sympathy and condolences,

Tina Mark, Forest Wildlife Biologist, Tahoe National Forest
