My sympathies go out to the family and friends of Mrs. Loverde-Singleterry. Miss Loverde was my first grade teacher at Mark Twain Elementary in 1956. My mother and I attended her wedding which was such a privilege for a young girl of six. Miss Loverde was such a beautiful bride. The experience left a life-long impression on me. Plus, the whole class had to learn to write our teacher´s new name, Singleterry, which was quite a challenge. I always admired her. The most lasting impression for me is her kindness. It was a blessing to see that she continued to have a life we´ll-lived.

My kindergarten teacher - I have such fond memories of her. When I was five, my mom sent me to school with a (vacant) wasp nest for show-and-tell, all neatly labeled on cardboard. After school, I told her a wild tale about it hatching mid-class and causing total chaos. Horrified, she sent a note of apology to my teacher - which I delivered, having completely forgotten the story I´d made up the day before.
During circle time, my teacher read the note, looked at me and asked, "Carolyn... what is this?" I calmly replied, "Oh-silly her. My mother has trouble telling the difference between fantasy and reality I guess."
Later, at pickup: "See, Mrs. Hodge, there is a difference between fantasy and reality..." as I stood beside her nodding my head, silently supporting her brief talk with my mother. Needless to say, I was not her favorite daughter that day, but it´s one of my favorite funny school memories.
Another favorite memory would be when she had to hold up the entire Christmas recital because I could not wrap my mind around having to cover up my fine lace holiday dress with this paper bib and bow we all had to wear to match and kept politely explaining to her, "oh- no thank you. This, is lace. So thank you but no thanks." But she was patient with me and I obliged. Fashionably late as she walked me on stage alone to join my class, waving at the crowd along the way. She always made it feel comfortable to be silly and ourselves when appropriate, and was a master at keeping us in line just as well. We need more teachers in the world like her.
Thank you for being my teacher. Heartfelt condolences to her family during this time
