Sacramento, California - Born on May 7, 1928, in Sacramento, California, to James and Katina Paras. Died peacefully, surrounded by her family, at the age of 97 years and 6 months.
Sophie will always be remembered as a devoted wife, mother, Yiayia, daughter, sister and aunt. Preceded in death by the love of her life, Regos, to whom she was married for 52 years. She was also preceded in death by siblings Emmanuel Paras, George Paras, Helen Piperis, Mary Curtis and Constantine Paras. Sophie is survived by her children, Tom Theodore (Julie) of Ohio and Zoe Pasco Wagner (Blaine) of Folsom, California; grandchildren Matt Theodore, Andrew Theodore (April), Nick, Sophie and Tony Pasco; step grandchildren Bodey and Shianne Wagner, and great grandchildren Aiden and Arden Theodore; sisters Kiki Econome and Antonia Chapralis (Tim); and, many nieces and nephews, whom she loved dearly.
Sophie was a proud Alumna of Sacramento High School, Sacramento City College, and San Francisco State University, where she obtained a teaching credential. She began her teaching career as a Physical Education teacher in 1950 at Vacaville High School. She subsequently became an elementary school teacher, educating children in Utah, Texas, and California. She spent 22 years in the Sacramento City Unified School District teaching at both Phoebe Hearst and Marian Anderson elementary schools before retiring in 1983.
Sophie met Regos in 1952 in Vacaville while he was stationed at Travis Air Force Base. Six months later they married and moved overseas, living in both England and Libya. During their time away from California, they traveled to many countries and U.S. cities, sharing adventures and making forever memories. They made Sacramento their home in 1961, where they raised their family.
Sophie was a lifelong parishioner of the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church. Over the years she volunteered for a variety of causes: teaching Sunday school, sewing Greek dance costumers and altar boy robes, and cooking delicious Greek food for the annual Greek Food Festival. She was a member of the Senior League and the Philoptochos for many years.
Our Sophie was the "Rock". She was patient, kind, witty and spunky. Most importantly, she was selfless and loving. All that knew her will miss her deeply.
The Trisagion service will be held at the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church, 616 Alhambra Blvd., Sacramento, on Tuesday, December 9th, at 6:00 pm. The funeral service will be held at the Annunciation Church on Wednesday, December 10th, 12:00 pm, with the interment to follow at East Lawn Cemetery, 4300 Folsom Blvd. Following the internment, we will return to the Annunciation Church for a Makaria (memorial luncheon).
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Sophie's memory to the Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church.
