Steven MATHIAS Obituary

MATHIAS, Steven Boyd
7 September, 1954 - 14 May, 2014

Steve was born in Logan, Utah. He grew up in Kansas City and southern California and lived most of his adult life in northern California. He graduated from the University of the Pacific, in Stockton, with a degree in engineering. He worked as an engineer in manufacturing most of his career.

Steve was an avid outdoorsman, riding his bike tens of thousands of miles and spending many happy days hiking and weeks off-trail backpacking in the high Sierra. He travelled in Asia, Africa, North and South America, and Europe. Steve volunteered extensively during his lifetime, especially for Habitat for Humanity and the California State Railroad Museum. His life remained full during four years of retirement. Steve was a skilled craftsman who could design and build just about anything made of wood or metal in his home workshop. Steve will be remembered for his problem-solving abilities, quirky sense of humor, eccentric recycling tendencies, and eagerness to help others fix things. He was very generous with his time and abilities.

Steve died at age 59 of urachal cancer at his home in Elk Grove. He is survived by his wife of 23 years Darlene DuBois Mathias; his mother, Roberta Heywood Mathias; sister, Terri Shaver; and brothers, Mark Mathias and Bill Funkhouser, as well as many other beloved family members and friends. Memorial gifts can be made to Sacramento Habitat for Humanity. A memorial service will be held at 3:00 pm on Sunday, June 29 at Sierra2 Center, 2791 24th St, Sacramento.

I'll never forget the first time I met Steve. He showed up to our office at Habitat on his bicycle wearing a faided t-shirt and some 1980's short jean shorts. I remember thinking, "Who is this guy?". Little did I know that he would become such an big part of our Habitat family. Steve was an inspiration to all of us on staff.
