Steven Sherman Obituary

April 12, 1960 - December 24, 2015 Steve Sherman and his wife, Kathleen Kinney, spent many happy hours hiking trails around their Sacramento home. He also loved time spent in Yellowstone and Yosemite, and anywhere with mountains, despite his Wausau, Wisconsin birth place and upbringing in Northbrook, Illinois. Steve was a man of many talents. He was a jogger, a juggler, a hiker, a musician, an animal lover, and a math tutor. He acted on his passions, volunteering at Happy Tails animal shelter and the Sacramento SPCA, becoming an active member of the Sacramento Recorder Society, the Sacramento Concert Band, and the Sacramento Valley Symphonic Band Association. He was a graduate of the University of Wisconsin, earning a Master's Degree in Actuarial Science in 1983. He had a distinguished career in that field with the majority of his time spent as a consulting actuary for Milliman. A highlight of his career was the year he spent working for the British actuarial firm of Bacon and Woodrow in London. The greatest accomplishment of his career was that it led him to meet Kathleen Kinney, who became his soul mate, best friend, and life partner when they married in 1996. He enjoyed cats, mathematics, crossword puzzles, football (especially the Packers and the 49ers), playing music, concerts, reading, hiking, writing and blogging. He was especially proud of successfully completing the November writing challenge NaNoWriMo in 2009 and 2013 and learning to play the ukulele in 2015. Steve had a quick wit and a way with words. He was a good friend, neighbor and son-in-law, ready to help whenever he could. He was also a courageous and honest man who chose to live as graciously and wisely as he could until the moment of his death. He is survived by his wife, Kathleen Kinney; his parents, June and Sy Sherman; his sister, Paula Sherman; his brother, Bob (Martha) Sherman; his nieces, Rachel Jensen and Claire Sherman, his nephew, Alex Sherman; his mother-in-law, Peggie Kinney; and many aunts, uncles, cousins and friends. There will be a "wake" at Steve and Kathleen's house on January 17, 2016 from 12 to 7 p.m.

I have many fond memories of Steve during my years in high school. Especially all of those times in the GBN Band! May he rest in eternal peace.

I will always miss you, Steve. Though the sting may ease with time, the memories will not fade.

I worked with Steve at Milliman in Wisconsin. He was such a joy to work with - always bubbly and excited about life. He loved to juggle, and did so most Friday afternoons out in the lobby just to bring smiles to end a long week. He also taught juggling to a group of cub scouts I had.

I can still hear his voice the day he told me about the client he was going to see - a client that he enjoyed more than others - named Kathleen - who soon became his wife.

The world lost a wonderful man, and my heartfelt sympathies go out to Kathleen and anyone who had the pleasure to know this laid back man with a huge personality.
