Vernon Hornback Obituary

HORNBACK, Vernon
T. ''Ted''
Born on October 3, 1931 in Bowling Green, KY, Ted Hornback Jr. died on September 22, 2005, just short of his seventy-fourth birthday. He is survived by his beloved wife of forty-three years, Patricia Barrett Hornback; his three sons, Ted and Jim of Sacramento and Bob of Atlanta, GA; foster son, Maurice Jordan of Sacramento; grandchildren Rosalind and Genevieve Hornback and Lillyanna Jordan; his brother, Prof. Bert G. Hornback of Amsterdam, the Netherlands; and sister, artist Ann Hornback Williams of New Orleans, LA. He began his forty-five year career teaching English and American literature in 1953 at St. Louis University. After receiving his Masters degree there in 1955 and serving in the U.S.A.F. from 1955-57, he taught at Southern Illinois University from 1959 to 1963 before receiving his Ph.D. from St. Louis University in 1963. He then became an English professor at California State University, Sacramento, where he taught for thirty-seven years and served as Chair of the English Department for twenty-eight years. A funeral Mass will be held on Monday, September 26, at 11:00 a.m. at Presentation Catholic Church with a reception immediately following. The family asks that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the California State University, Sacramento, Emeritus Association Library Fund or the Jesuit High School Faculty Endowment.

Ted was an inspiring colleague at Sacramento State. He had an image bigger than life in the Faculty Senate and as Chair of the English Department.

Thank you Professor Hornback for all you did. I will always have good memories of college because of you and your great sense of humor.

Memories of Dr. Hornback are flooding back into my mind. A shock of brown hair, tremendous energy, a love of the language, an acceptance and recognition of us green students as unique and full of quirks. Thank you for sharing him with those of us who were youthful CSUS students back in the 60s!

Bob remembers Ted as his teacher at Sac State. His class in American Literature was one of the most interesting classes he took. He was also Bob's adviser for his master's thesis. Ted was not only very interesting and intelligent but very caring. He had a wonderful smile which he shared easily. Many prayers for you Pat and your family.
