On behalf of my mother, Lee Gee, my four siblings and I, our deepest condolences to the family on the passing of Aunt Virginia.
My parents became acquainted with Aunt Virginia´s husband Jack when he was a co-owner of Yuba Market, in Marysville. Overhearing his surname while grocery shopping, Mom noted it was the same as our family´s. Mom struck up a conversation with Jack, and the friendship started.
It was the Sutter and Yuba County flood of 1955, Christmas eve, that sealed the long-lasting friendship between the families. When forced to evacuate Marysville, Jack and Virginia drove their family of eight to our Yuba City home; it was thought Yuba City would be safe. Instead, both our families (nine children combined; myself, I was 7 months old) and another set of friends ended up on the roof. Dad, in his galoshes, piggybacked Virginia, and others, off the roof to a waiting rescue boat.
My parents shared the produce grown from our farm with Virginia and Jack. In later years, Virginia had an interest in growing her own vegetables as well. Mom gave Virginia long bean and bitter melon seeds to grow.
I remember Aunt Virginia was always well dressed and coiffed. She regularly came over after finishing up at her hairdresser in Yuba City. She shared her style savvy with Mom when my mother became "mother of the bride" for my wedding. Virginia was a seasoned pro from her own children´s weddings.
Counting Virginia as one of their closest friends, my parents included Virginia in small luncheons in Yuba City to see our twin babies. Of course, photos are part of the memories. In one, Aunt Virginia held our baby son.
Thank you, Aunt Virginia, for your part in our Gee family´s life, and for giving us many memories.
