William Schubauer Obituary

William "Bill" Schubauer
March 27, 1940 - March 4, 2021
Davis, California - William "Bill" Schubauer died on March 4, 2021, of complications from cancer. He was 80 years old. Born in Philadelphia, PA, to Walter M. and Margaret T. (Gillett) Schubauer, Bill was a "Navy brat", growing up mostly in California port cities with a stint during his teenage years in the Philippines.
Bill's career was in vocational rehabilitation. He worked for both the state Dept of Vocational Rehabilitation in field and staff positions, and the federal Dept of Education, Office of Special Education and Rehabilitation Services as a Rehabilitation Program Specialist. He is survived by his wife Margaret Griffin; brother Steve (Mary) of Colfax; son Greg of Anchorage, AK; daughter Darcy Ellstrom of Edmunds, WA; and son Jeff of Anchorage, AK. He was predeceased by his parents and his older brother Jim.
Bill loved professional football, playing golf, and sailing. He and Margaret lived aboard "Mabuhay", their Islander Freeport 36' sailboat for 14 years. Three of those years were spent cruising between Mexico, Hawaii, and British Columbia.
Bill and Margaret moved to University Retirement Community at Davis in 2005. Bill was active in supporting the URC Foundation fundraising efforts by helping residents sell their cars to benefit the Foundation, and refurbishing and selling mobility devices.
We are grateful for the wonderful care he received from Yolo Hospice and the personal care aides at URC. Donations in Bill's memory accepted at Yolo Hospice, 1909 Galileo Ct., Suite A, Davis, CA 95618. Per his wishes, there will be no services.

Bill was the nicest and most even tempered person I've known in a long time. He was great to play golf with, although the last 2 years have been tough. He was great to know!
