Zoe MORGAN Obituary

MORGAN, Zoe
Passed away Feb 26, 2012 in Carmichael. She was 87. Zoe was preceded in death by her grandparents Wilber and Cynthia Smith who both helped settle Sacramento in the mid 1800's and her father Darwin Smith an advertiser and one-time city editor of the Sacramento Bee. Zoe's mother Jaque Smith was an accomplished writer in her own right and reported stories for both the Union and the Bee. Zoe was born April 27, 1924 and grew up in Sacramento and Carmichael. She attended San Juan High and Heald College. It was the war, a party, a piano and a guitar that brought Zoe and her future husband Woody Kellison together. Sharing a love of making music, it was not long before the two were married in April 1943. The family moved to Sacramento where they had two daughters and lived until Woody's death in 1963. In 1966 Zoe was happy to find and marry Hon. William Morgan and they spent 40 exciting years together. Filled with compassion and interest in others, Zoe made friends easily.

She was an early volunteer in the Sacramento Fair Housing Committee, a faithful League of Women Voters member and most notably a founding member of the Sacramento Children's Receiving Home Guild. She was involved in organizations too numerous to mention. Zoe and her sister Sally Weinland were both honored by the Sacramento Soroptomists Club as Volunteers of the Year. Zoe's curiosity and concern for all people was demonstrated by her membership in St Marks Methodist Church as well as the National Council of Jewish Women both known for their social action programs. Later in life Zoe began to mentor young people, school children, new immigrants and people she met along the way. She was smart and funny and people said her presence made life easier for everyone around her.

Zoe was an avid reader of biographies, newspapers and murder mysteries. She loved words and was unbeaten at Scrabble. Zoe is survived by daughters Carol Hancock and Bonnie Morgan (Jim Casper). Her sister Sally Weinland also survives her as do her grandchildren Brett, Craig and Christopher Hancock, Javier Saragosa and Marlon Morgan as well as fond nieces, nephews and cousins.

Much love to Kim and Tyrone Gillespie, Nessie Laui and Letio Jackson for their support. We also give many thanks to the caring staff at Sunrise Senior Living of Carmichael.

At Zoe's request services will be private. In lieu of flowers, donations made to the Sacramento Children's Receiving Home would be an appreciated way to celebrate her.

I just recently found out of the lost of our dear friend. I met Zoe through the Children's Receiving Home Guild. Every time I saw her at our luncheon she was always friendly and always gave a hug and a smile. I will miss her.
It was a honor knowing her. My condolence to the family.

Zoe was my mother's best friend for life. I was only a little girl when we lived in Carmichael but many of my fondest memories from those days revolve around Zoe and her family. I remember the countless afternoons we would spend visiting. It was mostly girl time. We women (I was maybe 8 but being raised as a good feminist) would sit around discussing the important issues of the day. On special occassions, Bonnie - who was then a beautiful teenager - would take me horsebackriding on her Morgan horse and sometimes we even collected fresh dove eggs. Next door (or at least that is how I remember it) lived my beloved 1st grade teacher, Zoe's sister, Mrs. Weinland. Then, of course, there was Haha and her mischievious monkey. It was simply a child's wonderland.

I send my heartfelt love to this wonderful family that embraced us and fill our lives with love and joy.

I never met Zoe but I do know Bonnie and I've met her sister Carol. Both of these women are amazing, so it only stands to think their mother was too. Embrace the good memories of the strong wonderful woman Zoe was.

Although I am not 'legally' wedded to the family, I have always loved Zoe as a grandmother. Her smiles and laughs fill my heart when I think of her. No one in the world can compare with you Zoe. I love you. I'll miss you.

It was such a joy and honor to know and spend time with Zoe. She and her husband, the Hon.Bill Morgan, graciously opened their home several times in the late 1970s and early 1980s for events given by the Sacramento Assoc. of Black Attorneys (now the WMBA). I will always remember how kind and supportive she was of me as a new attorney. I also recall how Zoe really loved blues and jazz. When she learned I was getting married and wanted to play the Etta James classic, she sweetly loaned me her prized Etta James CD featuring "At Last". Rest in peace sweet soul.

I was blessed to have had Zoe touch our lives - always caring, spirited, upbeat and loving. Zoe gave me the best gift ever, her daughter, Bonnie, as my very good friend, in whom Zoe continues to live on and on and on....

I think there is no better way to leave a mark in this world than to touch lives in a compassionate way. Zoe spent her life working to make positive changes for individuals and for society. She then did us all a favor by passing on the legacy of her warrior spirit to her daughters. How fortunate I will be to continue seeing her enthusiasm through her family.
