Chlota Mathews Obituary
SALISBURY - Mrs. Chlota Walters Mathews, 95, of Salisbury, passed away Monday, June 16, 2014, at Lutheran Home at Trinity Oaks in Salisbury.
Born Sept. 26, 1918, in Slocum, Texas, she was the daughter of the late Ella Denson Walters and Hilton Robert Walters, both educators.
Mrs. Mathews embraced her Texas heritage and was proud that her father served in the Texas legislature where he sponsored a bill which successfully provided for free text books for school children.
Chlota lived in Kingsport, Tenn., from 1945 until moving to Salisbury where she enjoyed a career in real estate. She enjoyed golf, bridge, gardening and college football.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Dr. Murray Mathews; and grandson John O. Reynolds III.
Those left to cherish her memory are daughters Susan Mathews Spurrier (Wayne), Patsy Mathews Reynolds (Ozzie) and Kathy Mathews; grandchildren Hilary Gray Spurrier and Chancellor Murray Reynolds; and her cats, Leo, Flora and baby cat Nora.
Arrangements: Memorial service will be held 2 p.m. Friday, June 20 at First Presbyterian Church in Salisbury. Visitation will be held in Lewis Hall following the service. Burial will be held at a later date.
Memorials: May be made to Lutheran Home at Trinity Oaks, 728 Klumac Road, Salisbury, NC 28144; and Humane Society of Rowan County, 112 W. Innes St., Salisbury, NC 28144.

Patsy, Missy and I are saddened by your loss, but know how much you treasured her many years. Wish we'd known her, but I'm sure she was very special to have a daughter like you! We are gallivanting in England right now, but hope to see you after we get home. Love to you and Ozzie. John

Even though I never knew Mrs. Matthews, I felt as if I should know her through the things Suzan told me about her. Our thoughts and prayers go out to her family. She will be missed by so many. We may be prepared for the death of our mother, but we are never ready. As a family, try to remember all the good memories you shared. Only time will lessen the sorrow.
