Donald Maphis Obituary

Donald (Don) William Maphis of Daleville, VA passed away peacefully and triumphantly on May 17, 2024.

Don was born on January 11, 1932 in Romney, W.Va. to the late Catherine Baker and Issac William Maphis. He served in the US Marine Corps as Drill Instructor, marrying his childhood sweetheart, Sue, during his time of service. After Earning his M.A. in physical education from West Virginia University, Don spent many happy and fulfilling years coaching football at Clark Co. HS in VA and later at Catawba College in Salisbury, NC; also holding positions of Dean of Students and educator. He is remembered for cherishing God, family, and his football players! Don carried a large presence in his life, holding the beloved names of Dad, Coach, and best Granddad in the world! Don was a life long learner himself and remained a positive role model for all those in his life. He was a faithful member of First Presbyterian Church in Salisbury and Bedford UMC in VA.

Preceding him in death and waiting to welcome him Home are his first wife Sue Pancake, second wife Massie Cargill, and daughter-in-law Jackie Maphis.

Family surviving, loving, and missing him are sons, Scott Maphis and wife Mary Jo of Salisbury, NC; Sam Maphis of Lexington, NC; and daughter Rande Maphis Maynard of Augusta, GA; and because he was lucky enough to have 2 families: Nancy Cargill and husband Bill Wilkes, Jay Cargill and wife Sharon, Bill Cargill and wife Lisa, Jim Cargill and wife Mary Beth. Don was so very proud of his grandchildren Laura Maphis, Anna Maphis, Scott Maynard, Kelley Maynard (Taylor Beatty), and a great grandson, Liam Maynard. They were the twinkle in his eye and the delight in his laugh.

Following the hugs and kisses at the end of every family visit, Granddad always concluded his goodbyes with “Peace”, and so it goes ……………….

Visitation will be held Wednesday, May 22, 2024 from 10-11AM in the mausoleum at Rowan Memorial Park. Services will follow at Rowan Memorial Park in Salisbury, NC at 11:00am.

Memorials may be made to Alzheimer's Association at https://act.alz.org.

Sam,Scott,Rande thanks for sharing your dad with me. Or did he share you with me. It has been years since Ive seen you. Just know your Meadowbrook brother always thinks about our time growing up. God bless you.
