Evelyn Thompson Obituary

Evelyn Polk Thompson, 91, went home to be with her Lord and Savior on November 3, at home after a long battle with Alzheimer's. She was born June 22, 1934 in Kannapolis to Blaine J Polk Sr and Edna Black Polk. She was a distant cousin of President James K Polk. She was educated at Landis Elementary School through the third grade. Her family moved to Midland, and she continued her education at Bethel. Her family moved back to Kannapolis in the middle of her junior year of high school. She graduated from AL Brown in 1953. She married Joe Harold Thompson on September 4, 1954. They were married over 71 years,

In 1957, she joined Cannon Mills as an employee in the payroll department, in the order and data department and in the computer room. She retired September 27, 1996.

She was a very talented lady. She was an excellent seamstress and made her own clothes. She also had a green thumb. Over the years, she and Harold raised large gardens. They gladly shared with family and friends. She loved flowers and raised many kinds. She was an outdoor girl.

She was very active in church. She taught a children's Sunday school class and was a leader for the Girls in Action. She sang in the choir and served on various committees.

She was a member of the South Rowan Boosters club. For several years, she served as treasurer. She popped popcorn at the home football games.

She and Harold traveled a lot during their retirement years. They traveled the East Coast from Canada to Florida. They followed the Catawba football team to many away games including some playoff games. They also went to Florida to watch the spring training for several years.

She was preceded in death by her parents. Left to cherish her memory are her husband, Joe Harold Thompson; daughter, Jody Thompson Wyatt (David); son Kale Thompson; Granddaughters, Jenna Thompson Brown (Rusty); Olivia Thompson; Sophia Thompson; Great granddaughters Ellie and Josie Brown; and her brother Julian Polk (Connie).

The family will receive friends Tuesday, November 11, 2025, from 1:00 PM - 2:00 PM at Franklin Heights Baptist Church 526 Wright Ave, Kannapolis, NC 28083.

The funeral service will begin at 2:00 PM in the church sanctuary with Rev. David Wyatt and Rev. Ricky Brown officiating. Burial will follow at West Corinth Baptist Church Cemetery.
