Frank Sides Obituary

Frank Allen Sides

SALISBURY - Frank Allen Sides, 95, of Salisbury, passed away Wednesday, May 29, 2013, at Genesis Eldercare of Salisbury.

Born June 14, 1917, in Salisbury, he was the son of the late Valda Estelle Elliotte Sides and James A. Sides. He graduated from Spencer High School, Class of 1937, and served in the NC National Guard's 105th Engineer Company C for three years.

Mr. Sides was employed for Southern Railway, Yarbrough Appliance and Furniture, and Fiber Industries before retiring.

He was a member of Calvary Baptist Church and served as a Sunday School teacher for over 60 years. He would still teach sometimes until the age 89 before giving it up, and served as church clerk for 16 years and Sunday School superintendent for two years.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Malva Kester Sides, "The love of his life," who he married June 17, 1939, and who died Sept. 2, 1981; an infant daughter, Violet May Sides, on Oct. 2, 1951; grandson Scott Patrick Sides, on April 18, 1978; granddaughter Tanya Alina Iddings, on Jan. 15, 1969; four sisters; and two brothers.

Those left to cherish his memory are his son, Frank Patrick Sides of Salisbury; daughter Sue S. Iddings and husband Max of Kernersville; brother Jack Sides of Salisbury; his special boys (six), who were the light of his life, grandchildren Kevin Iddings and wife Tricia of Kernersville, Waylon Iddings and wife Amy of Raleigh, Kyle Iddings and wife Carly of Davidson; great-grandchildren Chase Iddings of Kernersville, Aidan Iddings and Ben Iddings of Raleigh; daughter-in-law Judith T. Sides of Salisbury; three step-grandchildren; five step-great-grandchildren; and five step-great-great-grandchildren.

Service: Funeral services will be conducted 4 p.m. Saturday (June 1) at Calvary Baptist Church with the Rev. Dr. Rick Cockerham officiating. Mr. Sides will lie in state one hour before the service. Interment will follow at the church cemetery.

Visitation: The family will receive friends from 3-4 p.m. Saturday in the Fellowship Hall of Calvary Baptist Church.

Memorials: May be made to Calvary Baptist Church, 2255 E. Ridge Road, Salisbury, NC 28144.

We want to thank Dr. Amin for the care he gave our daddy over the years and taking the extra time to listen to the history of Salisbury and Ellis X-Roads, his grandchildren and great-grandchildren; to the women who served him over the years at several restaurants; to all the people who would pay for his meal without letting him know who they were at the time.

A special thanks to the neighbor who would put his papers on the porch, rain, snow, etc. Thanks a lot to his other neighbors for your help and support, to his church friends: he loved all of you, especially his church.

We, his family, want to thank God especially for giving him to us for almost 96 years. He was looking forward to his 96th, but Daddy, you will still be with us on your special day. We love you.

Hubert and I had the priviledge of getting to know this quiet, sweet, and kind-hearted Christian while members of Calvary Baptist. Anytime we ran into Frank at K&W he always wanted to talk for a while. He remembered every Christmas card, B-Day card, or special occasion card you would send him and always wanted to say "Thank you" to the sender. We just learned of his passing yesterday at Church. We loved Mr. Frank and he will be missed by all.

So sorry for the loss of a very friendly and loving man. We went to church together back in the fifty's. I saw him at work at Celanese. He was such an easy going person. He will be missed but we will see him on the other side. Charles and I are in our mid-eighty's and can't get out much. Remember that God is your strength during times like these. We went to church and lived in the same community with Max Ray's parents. We also remember them as wonderful people.
