Joanna Cuthbertson Obituary

Joanna Elizabeth Hogan Cuthbertson, age 102, of Spencer, North Carolina, passed away peacefully at her home on Tuesday, December 23, 2025.

Mrs. Cuthbertson was born on November 17, 1923, in Lexington, North Carolina, to the late William and Thelma Hogan. She was educated in Lexington and graduated from Dunbar High School before continuing her education at Livingstone College in Salisbury, North Carolina.

A faithful and devoted member of New Jersey A.M.E. Zion Church, Mrs. Cuthbertson served as a deaconess and was an active member of the Women's Home and Overseas Missionary Society of the A.M.E. Zion Church. She also worked alongside her husband as a teacher in one of the first African American kindergarten programs at Greenville Memorial A.M.E. Zion Church in Charlotte, North Carolina. Mrs. Cuthbertson was also awarded the Champion of Faith award from the Winston Salem District of the A.M.E. Zion Church.

Mrs. Cuthbertson retired from PPG in Lexington, North Carolina, after 20 years of dedicated service.

She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Elder Mayhew Randall Cuthbertson, to whom she was married for 52 years; her son, Mayhew R. W. Cuthbertson; her daughter, MeEsther Wilson; her sister, Lula Mae Bell; and her granddaughters, Selena Cuthbertson and Monica Alexander.

She leaves to cherish her memory her daughter, Thelma Cuthbertson, Jaquan Cuthbertson- Banks and Shelton Smith of the home and her grandchildren: Kisha Wilson, Tisha Wilson, Joanna Banks Smith (Tony), Aprilia Kuhn (Greg), Edy Charles Banks Jr., Nicole Banks, Mayhew Cuthbertson Jr. (Kristy), Melissa Alexander, and Marcus Cuthbertson; along with a host of great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.

Those who knew Mrs. Cuthbertson will remember her for her homemade cakes and pies, her love of crossword puzzles, and the joy she found in spending time with her family.

The family expresses their deepest gratitude and appreciation to Mrs. Cuthbertson's caregivers: Anita Price (great-grandchild), Pamela Jefferies (family friend), Comfort Keepers, Bayada, and Trellis Supportive Care.

Arrangements: Services are Friday, January 2, 2026 at New Jersey AME Zion Church, Lexington, with Visitation at 1:00pm and Funeral at 1:30pm. Interment following services in the Church Cemetery. Reverend Tiesha Cuthbertson, Officiating and Presiding Elder, Winston-Salem District, Calvin Miller, Eulogist.
