It has been nearly 16 years, since that ill fated night I last saw Joshua heading out with his team for the mission rehersal I directly supported. When he never came back and his team leader informed us of what transpired, sadness overwhelmed our 19-man base for his loss. I ll always remember how 'still' the world felt over our base. I have the flag I flew over the base in his honor following that night. I would love to connect with his family to pass it to them. Please help if you know a member of the family.

It has been nearly a year and a half since my last note of condolences and remembrance of Joshua T. Harris. I only wished I could correct the misspelling of "was," but my intent was for the best. I have an American flag I had flown over the base where he was stationed. I would love to get it into the hands of the family if someone can assist. My email is [email protected] if someone can assist. Thank you!

I remember Joshua. I did not get to know him in depth as the S.E.A.L. Teams were rotated through our base every 3 months. I served 2 1/2 years at the CIA base he waz assigned to along with the other 18 Americans. He was quiet. His loss waz felt tremendously.

Josh, on this Veterns Day 2012, I am remembering you. I know it has been a while since you have been gone, yet in your Heavenly domain there is no such thing as Time. I always tell my kids about you and about your character..and how the character you had as a high schooler carried with you throughout life and rubbed off on others. And how here we are today talking about you and one of the consistent things we read about you from everyone is your character. You definitely had some wonderful parents and my heart goes out to your family on this day. Thanks bud for your sacrifice. I will always remember you and pay tribute to you and my children will grow up and know who Josh Harris was and what he did for them.

As our family approaches the one year anniversary of the loss of our beloved Josh Harris, we remember his dedication, devotion, service, and sacrifice to our country, his artistic abilities, his compassion, his warm smile, and his sense of humor. His family members are not the only ones to feel this loss, as everyone he ever came in contact with will understand. He was magnetic. His smile beamed through a room, his laugh was contagious, his friendship pure, and his heart – like his arms – always open and embracing.

In him, the country lost a soldier and a hero; his family lost a son, a brother, a part of our lives that cannot be replaced. Yet, in our grief, we rejoice in his spirit; for he demonstrated what a man should be, what a soldier can be, what a hero is, and left an indelible impression on those who were fortunate enough to know him.

From his schoolyard friends, to his football teammates, to his college classmates, to his military brethren, Josh endeavored to be and remained an inspiration. Leading by example and effort, through his honesty, though his temperament, through his loyalty, and through his devotion, he exemplified the meaning of a champion.

We will truly miss him.

As we scroll through these seemingly endless lists of men and women who have made the ultimate sacrifice, let us remember they were all sons and daughters, husbands and wives, fathers and mothers, and brothers and sisters of us all. We owe them all and their families a debt of gratitude that can only be superficially expressed in words, but truly, honestly, and deeply felt within our very hearts and souls.

If you know of a family that has lost a loved one, remember to console them not only during the recent days and weeks after their loss, but also in the months and years afterwards. Your thoughts and prayers are always appreciated. Memories can sometimes be a bit painful, but in the long run, the remembrance by others of a loved one is always appreciated. To have one’s life acknowledged is of the highest compliment.

God Bless America, and God Bless Our Service Members.

Prayer for Peace

Lord, make me an instrument of your peace;
Where there is hatred, let me sow love;
Where there is injury, pardon;
Where there is doubt, faith;
Where there is despair, hope;
Where there is darkness, light;
And where there is sadness, joy.

O Divine Master,
Grant that I may not so much seek to be consoled as to console;
To be understood, as to understand;
To be loved, as to love;
For it is in giving that we receive,
It is in pardoning that we are pardoned,
And it is in dying that we are born to eternal life.

Amen

To the family and parents of Joshua I want you to know that you are not alone in the grief you are feeling. I too know what you are going through and what you will go through in the coming weeks and months ahead. You will have many questions as to why? You will have many things to get ready or go through and that should be done in time. Sometimes it just can’t be faced and that’s ok, for you will know when the time is right for you. There is no right or wrong way to grieve it’s an individual journey that unfortunately we now have to take. I ask that God give the comfort, strength and courage that you are going to need. When and if the time is right for you please contact me. You can cry, vent, or just talk as only another person who has been where you are can really know what you are going through. May God continue to be with you and heal you

Remember Me.

I am a soldier,
A guardian of freedom,
A believer in my faith,
A warrior for righteousness,
A member of the strength of our nation.

I am a soldier,
A protector of those who cannot defend themselves,
A link in the chain of security,
A soul dedicated to good and equality,
A man ready to serve and protect.

I am a soldier,
My blood is neither red nor blue,
My allegiance to America is pure,
My fight is for my country,
My reward is simple and self-attained.

I am a soldier,
I feel no pain.
I lived for my brothers,
I died for my country.
I did this all, freely, for this is who and what I am.

I am a soldier,
Grieve not for me,
But honor and remember me.
For I lived my life for each of you.
I gave my life for my beliefs,
And I have no regrets.

I am a soldier.
I now lay down with my brethren.
I made the sacrifice, same as them.
I am satisfied that I gave my all,
For I am a soldier.

God accept me with open arms,
For I am a pure and simple man.
I loved my family and my country,
And I served them both very well,
For I can only do what I was meant to do.
For I am a soldier.

I am so sorry for the lost of your dear loved one. It's comforting
to know that God cares for all of us and losing a loved one is something we cannot get use to. The Bible gives us hope that one day we can see our dear loved one again. On behalf of all mankind Jesus surrender his soul for many. John 15:13 says “No one has love greater than this, that someone should surrender his soul on behalf of his friends.” Truly I am sorry to hear of the loss of your dear loved one and I hope these few words will bring you comfort and hope.

Josh, I just wanted to say thank you for your brave and honorable service to a grateful nation, a nation in mourning for our fallen hero’s. You like so many other sailors and soldiers chose to serve our nation when needed most and with your life you protected the very core of what America stands for. My nephew PFC Aaron J. Ward also made that sacrifice on 5/6/2008 when he was killed in action in Iraq. As I mourn for my nephew I mourn for you and so many other brave soldiers and know that you all will forever be in my thoughts and prayers, we as a nation will never forget you. I stand tall and salute you Josh and from the bottom of my heart I thank you for the nights we at home could sleep without fear and know that we are safe. To the Harris family, words cannot express the pain we now share, but our families will forever have a bond and we will be thinking of Joshua and your family and will keep you in our thoughts & prayers. Please accept my heart felt condolences and my prayer that god help you cope with this tragic loss and may the memories of your HERO carry you through each day. From one Gold Star family to another!

The Final Salute

“Brothers in Arms”, Military men and women down through the centuries, have traditionally exchanged “Hand Salutes” as a sign of recognition and as a way to render courtesy and respect one to another.

This “Hand Salute” is the last that we shall render to PO1c Joshua Harris our Brother in Arms. To his family it symbolizes the love and respect that we have for Joshua. And to Joshua it is rendered as a symbol of honor and gratitude to thank him for the ultimate sacrifice he made in combat while serving the U.S. Navy and his country. No greater love is shown than a man lay down his life for another. Joshua, you are a brave Navy SEAL, a Patriot Warrior and true Hero. With your passing, our Country has lost a National Treasure. We bid you a sad farewell. You will be dearly missed from among our ranks. Be at ease. Rest in Peace.

I first met Josh at my oldest Son's wedding this past May. He sat across from me with his curly hair and sly smile. I knew his polite demeaner and courtiousness would bring a smile to his parents faces. I was much impressed by his strength of character. He introduced himself to me and we made small talk and went our seperate ways. We met again at the wedding and had a grand time. Again I thought what a nice young man. When our son called to tell us of his passing my wife and I cried. How could he be taken from life so soon. Some how I knew he would not go quietly. When I later learned that he was a SEAL, it some how fit who he was. When I read his service record I was in awe of his accomplishments, and proud to have known him even if for such a short time. His life is a tribute to the strength and upbringing of his family and the community that helped raise him. I hope the strength that Josh learned from you will hold you tight in the tough times to come and that his smile will bring the sun out from behind the clouds. My grandmother once said that the pain in your heart is the memory of their spirit making room, I hope that is so.

I have such fond memories of Josh. I taught him dancing many years ago in my High Point Studio. He was such a great guy. I am a Vietnam Veteran and I am so sorry to hear of his death. I will keep all of you in my prayers. He will surely be missed.

We knew Josh personally. The military knocked on our door on September 1st. My heart stopped for a minute. Then we cried. We were blessed to have him as our neighbor. He was a unique man yet so down to earth. He loved what he did although never spoke about it, just the admiration he had for his job. My condolences to the Harris Family and his friends. Josh was and still is a true blessing to all who knew him.

Please accept my sincere sympathy for the loss of Joshua. Although I did not know him personally I knew his units very well. I served with the Marines in Korea and retired as a Captain from the Virginia Beach Police Department. I helped train the Seals in special fields during the early 1960s. They were called U.D.T. units at that time. I have never met better trained and bravery with any group of men. I have followed them during the years and they have only become better as each year passed. This country has lost a patriot and you have lost a very special person. May God bless you during these times of need.
