Louis Franklin Cole, Jr.

CONCORD - Louis Franklin Cole, Jr., 87, died Thursday, July 23, 2009, at Carolinas Medical Center-NorthEast.

He was born Aug. 24, 1921, in Cabarrus County; the son of the late Louis F. Cole, Sr. and Flossie Gray Cole.

He made a service career in the U.S. Air Force for 30 years until retiring in 1971; then worked for 12 years until 1984, as a foreman for Cannon Mills Co. Plt.#1 Distribution Center.

He was a member of St. James Catholic Church, a life member of the V.F.W. Poston-Perkins Post 8989, having served as commander eight times. He was also affiliated with the D.A.V. Chapter 27, American Legion Post 51 & the Air Force Sergeant's Association.

In addition to his parents he is preceded in death by daughter, Carolyn Jean Cole; and grandson, Zachary Paul Montognese.

Survivors include his wife of 63 years, Helen (Penny) Livingston Cole; four daughters, Judy Ann Montognese of Mt. Holly, Janice Marie Montognese (Mark) of Longmont, Colo., Jane Gray Montognese (Tony) of Cornelius and Michele Cole Barnhardt (Devon) of Concord; two sons, Louis Franklin Cole, III (Judy) and John Louis Cole both of Concord; 13 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

Service and Burial: 11 a.m. Tuesday at Whitley's Funeral Home Main Chapel, officiated by Rev. Joseph Dionne, C.Ss.R. Burial will follow at St. James Catholic Church Cemetery, with military rites conducted by the United States Air Force.

Visitation: 7-9 p.m. Monday at funeral Home.

Memorials: V.F.W. Poston-Perkins Post 8989, 2500 N. Cannon Blvd., Kannapolis, NC 28083.
