Maria K. Holtzclaw

SALISBURY - Maria Denise Kerr Holtzclaw, 39, of Salisbury, passed away on Tuesday, Jan. 7, 2014, at Forsyth Medical Center in Winston-Salem.

Maria was born Jan. 21, 1974, in Salisbury, the daughter of the late James B. Kerr and Sylvia Gilmore Kerr.

Maria attended Salisbury High School, North Carolina School of Math and Science in Durham and the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. She was employed as a logistics manager with Great Wide.

She was preceded in death by her parents; a grandfather, Floyd "Pop" Kerr Jr.; and a grandmother, Annie Jo Alexander Kerr.

She is survived by her husband, Erkyah Holtzclaw; her sons, Darone Boone and Darius Boone; a brother, Sedrick Kerr; a sister-in-law, Beverly House Kerr; grandparents Steve and Allie Gilmore; nieces LaShonda Harris, Jasmine Kerr and Dawnisha Kerr; a devoted sister-friend, Laura Melton; and numerous aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.

Service and Visitation: A Memorial Service will be held at Soldiers Memorial AME Zion Church Sunday, Jan. 12 at 2:30 p.m. The family will receive friends for 30 minutes prior to the service.

The family is receiving friends at 400 Harrell Street.

Rowan Funeral Service is assisting the family.

I'm at a loss for words...I am in total shock & disbelief!! I just saw Sed at Sheetz gas station & asked about you (Maria) & the family...we grew up together in Jersey City. We may not have stayed in contact but I loved you all as if you all were "family". Maria you have always been a sweet & bubbly person...we love you but God loved you more..continue to spread your love to our loved ones in Heaven!! We will one day see you again. Maria my friend, we grew up in jersey city, spent the nights at each other houses, we went almost everywhere together. I remember when we cheered for the YMCA. We had so much fun. I will never forget when I had to move to Charlotte after my mom got married. We cried so hard an begged if I could stay in Salisbury. Lol. I wish we would have kept in touch.we did locate each other an caught up with what's going on in our lives. As a teenager, Maria spent many days with my family, as she was friends with my daughter, She always had a big smile and a joyous personality. Though I only had the pleasure of knowing and working with Maria for a little over a year she was such a bubbly and cheerful person to work with and always made my days brighter when she walked by my desk each morning on the way to hers and said good morning. I worked with Maria daily but never had the chance to meet this cheerful and encouraging spirited voice in person. One of the many simple kind words and efforts that Maria did for me was...
Maria knew that I'm a single dad so she would from time to time, after I'd call her and give her my load information, tell me how to cook something really simple for my boys and I because she knew I couldn't cook. With real concern in her voice, she'd ask a few days later how it turned out. This was just to help someone out she 'd never laid eyes on and was over 600 miles away from in MS.
She would speak very highly of her husband and boys, she loved and was very proud of her family.
Maria touched my life from so far away with her caring and smiling tone and I'm sure that she's graced those that were closer even more ABUNDANTLY.
Maria is greatly missed and my prayers go out to the family and many friends.

I had the privelage of going to school with Maria! We graduated from Salisbury High together In 1992! Maria was such a beautiful person inside and out. She was always humble and had this smile that brightened your day. I can remember how we use to laugh at how funny her brother Sedrick is! God chose a smart and caring angel to help him in heaven!
