Melanie Campbell Obituary

Melanie “Mel” Simone Goforth Campbell, a resident of Emerald Assisted Living in New Symrna Beach, FL., went to be with her Lord and Savior on February 12, 2026 at Halifax Hospice Care Center in Edgewater, FL.

She was born to Jerry P. Goforth and Alice W. (Gypsy) Lattimore on January 14, 1961 in Rutherfordton, NC. A hard worker, Melanie wore many hats during her life. She'd been a server, bartender, brick maker, commercial painter, electrician's helper for Daniel Construction (Fiber Industries), and a reporter with her own entertainment column covering local nightlife for a Salisbury newspaper. Finding her calling as a CNA, it allowed her to do what she loved. Caring for others as a personal home caregiver. She performed these duties lovingly until her own health began to fail.

Melanie had many interests and hobbies over the years. She loved listening to classic and southern rock, country, gospel, and dancing at a disco. She enjoyed horseback riding and dancing the two-step with Bobby at Love Valley. Watching Jody play high school sports was her pride and joy. Camping and fishing were favorites, and even better with friends & family. She loved to dig in the dirt and developed a passion for “flowerpot gardening”. She grew beautiful flowers and tasty homegrown tomatoes. She was a Kennedy Hall American Legion post 106 Auxiliary member. She also had a very strong, core belief in God.

A fall in 2010 caused a traumatic brain injury that greatly affected her short-term memory. Subsequent strokes and lifelong epilepsy continued to damage both short and long-term memory. Despite these struggles, she never lost faith or forgot that God was carrying her. She prayed daily, and could still quote her scripture, even with her memory loss.

Along with her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Robert (Bobby) McCoy Campbell in 2008, grandparents, Jonathon V. Hampton and Alice E. Lynch, and sister, Yvette “Pooh” Hardin.

Left to cherish her memory are her son, Joseph “Jody” D'Agostino III (Alicia) of Daytona Beach, FL, 3 grandchildren, Benjamin, Grayson, & Abigail, sister, Yvonne Steele (Danny) of Norfolk, VA, nephew, Daniel Steele, of Norfolk, VA, niece, Gypsy Steele (Thomas) of Portsmouth, VA, uncle, Dave Lattimore

(Tammie) of Idaho City, ID, her beloved companion, Hans Medlin of Newton, NC, and her treasured extended family, Darriell and Susan Saine of Cleveland, NC.

al thanks to everyone at Emerald Assisted Living and Halifax Hospice for the dignity and compassion shown to Melanie while in their loving care.
