Minnie Byrd Obituary

Mrs. Minnie Young Byrd peacefully entered into eternal rest surrounded by her family on Thursday, March 5, 2020 at Novant Health Rowan Medical Center. Minnie was born in Fairfield County, South Carolina on August 28, 1928 to the late Minnie Crosby Young and Plummer Young. She was educated in Fairfield County Schools. On August 5, 1944, she married the love of her life the late Jesse Byrd, Sr., they were happily married for 74 years. In 1946, Minnie moved to Salisbury NC with her husband and worked diligently as a housekeeper at Rowan Cabarrus Community College, Food Lion Headquarters and throughout her community cleaning houses. Minnie was a faithful lifetime member of Mount Zion Missionary Baptist Church. Both Minnie Jesse received a Proclamation by Mayor Pro Tem Al Heggins deeming August 5, 2018 as Jesse and Minnie Byrd day in the City of Salisbury. In addition, she was the recipient of the “Phenomenal Woman” Community Award and was considered as “A Prayer Warrior Leader” for the Wilkesboro Road Community Club. In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by her sister, Mary Jane Young and Six brothers, John Young, Joe Young, Ernest Young, Donald Young, Wallace Young, Will Young and a great-grandson, Kornell Cook. Her life will forever be cherished by her 144 descendants whom she loved and adored, which includes 14 beautiful children, Nancy Smith, Jesse Byrd, Jr. (Angela), Marilyn “Ann” Wallace, Elder Katie B. Crockett (Jerry), Christine Vinson (Larry), Ernest Byrd, Patricia Sturdivant, Anthony Byrd, Kathy “Obby” Casler, Sammy Byrd, Ronnie Byrd, Mary ”Mae” Sturdivant (Donald), Gail Barber (Ronald), Angela Whisonant (Tim) and Alisha Byrd-Clark, reared in the home; 38 grandchildren, 66 great grandchildren and 26 great-great grandchildren.; brothers, Doby Young, Fate Young and Plummer Young; sisters, Doris Jackson and Ruby Phillips; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and many friends who loved her dearly. Services will be held on Sunday, March 15, 2020 at Livingstone College - Varick Auditorium with the visitation at 12:30 pm and funeral at 1:30 pm. Burial will follow at Rowan Memorial Park. Rev.
