Sharon Hughey Obituary

Sharon Corriher Hughey, 61, beloved wife, sister, cousin, aunt and friend, passed away peacefully from complications from cancer on Tuesday, May 16, 2023 at Novant Presbyterian Medical Center. She was born on September 9, 1961 in Mooresville to Frances Corriher Orbison and the late James Gray Corriher. Sharon was a 1979 graduate from West Rowan High School and from North Carolina State University with a degree in Electrical Engineering. After graduation, Sharon worked at the Shearon Harris Nuclear Power Plant near Raleigh during its construction phase. She then moved on to accounting, where among the places she worked included Good Hope Hospital in Erwin, NC, at Kangaroo Express headquarters in Sanford, NC, at Shat-R-Shield in Salisbury, and finally at the Rowan Chamber of Commerce where she retired. She was of the Methodist faith. Sharon's sense of humor and love of life was obvious. She and her husband had traveled around the U.S. and to Europe, Australia, and China. She enjoyed the outdoors - kayaking, fishing and walking - and spending time with her family. Sharon could be seen with friends and family at West Rowan football games, Catawba baseball, lacrosse and soccer games, and had a regular seat at the Rowan Legion Baseball games. She especially enjoyed organizing and hosting an annual family reunion in the fall. Sharon is survived by her husband of 41 years, David Hughey, her mother Frances Corriher Orbison, brother Ron Corriher (Tisha), sisters Linda Robinson (Chuck Cline) and Lisa Lingle (Jeffrey), and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. Arrangements: A graveside service with be held 3 p.m. Sunday, May 21, at Centenary United Methodist Church on Centenary Church Road, with a celebration of life service to be held at a later date. The family wishes to express thanks to all the staff in the Novant system, Harris Hospice House, and especially to the Wallace Cancer Center in Salisbury. Memorials: In lieu of flowers, Sharon would wish that you make an extra donation to your favorite charity and to give someone an extra smile. “Tears are the price we pay for love.” Summersett Funeral Home is serving the Hughey family.
